My Giro helmet says "Made in China", was brought in with DHL. I was charged 25% duty, plus the usual VAT/ATV (15.4%) and the DHL handling fee.

I've never paid or heard of anyone getting charged more than the 25% duty for helmets.

Duties are generally a bit of a cr@p shoot with customs. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it horribly wrong (Good luck trying to get them to see the error of their ways...)

I have heard of a few people doing the following though.... You buy a whole host of other small items like bolts, valve caps, grips etc and then somewhere in that long list of consumables you add your lid. Customs official will read the first few items and hopefully not get to your lid and not charge duties accordingly.

 

Not guaranteed but it has been known to work.
