Gatorskins for Roadbike

Well the fact that the Turbo Pro weighs 250g vs the 395g of the Gators certainly contributes to that. Not really the same class of tyre or an apples vs apples comparison. Using the GP4000S II would be more accurate.

Bertusras I didn't know there was such a weight difference .

I was more worried about which one lightened my wallet the least ....

Sorry if my comparison was apples for oranges ....

Well to state the obvious, a pretty significant issue. Beats me as to root-cause. Failure of adhesive layer? Hot spot? Cooked in the car in one spot? Manufacturing issue?

Let's here what the Hub has to say.....?

Maybe like a sharp edge of a pothole or something?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how this kind of damage happens to a tyre?

Could it be that that part of your tire was directly in front of your exhaust?

It's not necessarily a new tyre but its in reasonably good shape apart from this chunk that's somehow been taken out of it so its a shame that the rest of the tyre has to go to waste.

For the last four weeks i had 2 punctures and a side wall collapse with continental ultra race ??

In my experience, the Ultras are complete rubbish and puncture often, but I swear by the Gatorskins. I have a set of GP4000's but have punctured the a couple of times out of the very few times I've ridden them, whereas the Gatorskins I get a puncture maybe twice a year even while commuting on them every day and racing.

Gatorskins are great tyres. For those that have had issues with them you either got a bad set or your tyre pressure is off.

I'll add that Gatorskins are still just tyres. Don't go riding over glass and sharp objects.

The best way to avoid a puncture is to keep your tyre pressure right, wipe those little stones and pieces of glass out of your tyres after every ride and watch where you are going. Do this and your Gatorskins will go the distance.

Spez tires are great! Also the best value product in the Spez shop.

GP4000's are good but I find gators are a pain in the ass to pop off the rim when replacing the tube.

Same experience from my side, I guess there is some "luck" involved - but in my case Gatorskins were better than tubeless road tyres. I tried Schwable one pro x2 and Giant Gavia x2 costing double the price - both types developed irreparable holes (around one per month from glass while commuting).

Gatorskins are a bit heavier and not as grippy in the wet/cornering - but I use them for daily commuting, training and fun rides, close to 5000 km's on the current set. One small puncture from a thorn when doing some gravel riding over a 10 month period.

The wire bead are difficult to take off and put onto the rim. Try the foldable version (also a bit lighter than the wire bead).

Love my gatorskins.

I do race on GP4000 though.

I hit a cat eye at the argus this year on a pair of tubbies and the exact same damage happened.

I think what happens is there is a cut in the top layer rubber which then got sliced by the edge of the cat eye.

I ran gators for years but then switched to GP4000II

The weight never bothered me but the slipping in wet conditions got annoying!
