The City of Cape Town plans to finish building a cycling lane between Big Bay and Melkbosstrand by the end of September.

The 5.85km route is part of the city-wide plan to turn Cape Town into a pedestrian- and cycling-friendly city.

In a statement, the City said it had received many requests for the cycling lane as the route was popular over weekends, on public holidays and in the early morning.

Suzette Little, the mayoral committee member for area north, said the City had considered cyclist safety and the impact the lane would have on the environment, among other things, before going ahead with the project.

“The lane will benefit all users of this route, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in that it will create a safer environment for all,” she said.

A kerb will separate the 3m-wide lane from the road, as it runs alongside Otto Du Plessis Drive (M14) and the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.

Ms Little said no road closures were anticipated but the Derdesteen parking area had been closed to the public to accommodate a site camp.

“With the new cycle lane, getting to the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve will be easier, safer, and more fun,” said Ms Little.

Whist I welcome the extension/addition of cycle lanes I'm going to miss the dirt track that was already carved out over several years running alongside the beach road (Otto du Plessis drive) which is now going to become a tarred bike lane.

Concern that while the cycle lane is being constructed cyclists are going to have to brave the tar to the right of the yellow line, just like in Tokai.Either that or the R27,scary thought!!

Good news, this stretch is sketchy at best.

This is awesome news.  We are about to aquire a property at Lagoon Beach so will have a safe route to train on when down visiting my daughter.  Have ridden out to Koeberg many times when staying with my brother in Sunset Beach and always been a bit nervous on this stretch.

This is great news. Will see more cyclists on the road....getting the word out to all motorists to join up. We need less cars around.

One can then ride from town all the way to melkies...and even into Koeberg plant (if on a mtb). Nice long training ride

I see they are finally putting the proper top layer of smooth tar on the cycle path, I'd say about 55-60% of the total length is now done.

Anyone know on ETA to be completed ?

Certainly hope once finished, that ALL cyclists will use the path.

You know there are going to be guys who ride the gravel on the other side....
