Idea for multiday training

Hi Guys,

So with the Le Tour de France coming up in July, I have been toying around with an idea, just not sure if it will be a good idea if your body is not conditioned for it.

Since I work for a university, we will be in recess for the duration of the TdF. So I have been thinking that I want to ride every day that the tour is running, but try and simulate similar stages to what they are riding. e.g. Hill stages, TT etc but obviously at reduced distances, and also less climbing since I do not have crazy hills close to home.

Has anybody attempted this before? Also would it be a great idea for an amateur to attempt riding for 21 days and only 2 rest days?

I remember somebody arranging something similar with the Joburg2C hence where i got the idea.

Why not? If you have the time, do it. It'll just make you fitter and stronger.

Eat well, recover well and enjoy. If you're only riding around close to home it's not like you'll find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere when you feel you can't go anymore. Just do it.

You got the idea from the Commuting challange.  Agree with Squier.  Go for it but you might want to revisit that thread as there are quite a few tips in there. You won't be commuting as such but you will still go through an experience when you all of a sudden cycle everyday which your body is not accustomed to.  As mentioned you will have to check your diet and make sure you sleep/rest well.  Propably (depending on your fitness and current training routine) between day 3 - 5 you might think that this was not such a good idea but after that you should get into a routine and will find that your overall fitness makes a huge leap forward.

Thanks, I will go look up the thread again. By my calculation if I ride 47km per day and then the actual TT distances, I should end up with 929.5km for the 21 days...... I am not sure if that is maybe a bit too ambitious.

47Km per day is little dude.

What is your weekly avg now?

log all your training on Strava using a HR monitor...  Then use Stravastix to track your "form".  That way you will be able to manage your efforts so that you can go for 21 days in 23 without cooking yourself

In summer it is about 160-180km. On a good week I manage 250km

So you do +- 720km in a month already.

That extra 200Km shouldn't hurt you too bad.

Will be excellent training

Bear in mind with the cold my training distances have come down due to me being stuck on the IDT. Got sick 2 times in a row because of the cold morning air. But even so I still manage a 100km per week

Well you have to use the last couple of weeks as a base.  If you did an avg of 100km per week at the moment.  Come the TDF you will have to up that to 329 km per week.  If you going to do that in one week then you will feel it.  But the TDF is still 3 weeks away so you can start upping your weekly milage and then you should not have too much problems.  Start this week and do two days with one day break (25-30 km),  Next week start increasing your distance to say 40 and make it 3 days with one day break.

I am motivated to do this, but you making me wonder if I am not too ambitious. I will try get my weekly milage back up to what it was in april. Any Ideas as to how I can create a challenge on strava or something, so if there are any other crazies out there they can join in?
