2 bikes on Tacx Satori Smart

So I'm looking to get this trainer, for me and my wife to use - she's on a 27.5 with 9spd cassette and I'm on a 29 with 10spd cassette.

Thinking of buying a separate 27.5 wheel with trainer tyre - does it seem likely we can both use that wheel on the trainer? I suppose the 9spd/10spd discrepancy makes it unlikely...

Any other complications I should anticipate?

That sounds like a lot of work. change the rear wheel on the bike everytime any of you wanna train. Why not go get a cheap steel frame road bike from a pawn shop that kind of fits you both and mount it on the trainer.

Lol - I'm 1.95m tall, "kind of fits us both" isn't really an option...

Would have to change it anyway, to put the wheel with the trainer tyre on? It doesn't seem like a mission - training normally involves loading MTB into car and driving to a trail....

Good enough reason to upgrade wife's bike to 10 speed

That sounds like a plan. Do you think a 27.5 wheel on my 29er on the trainer could work?

See no reason why not, lots of guys use a 26er wheel as not many trainers were able to take a 29er

I use one of my road training wheels on my mtb on the trainer. Both the road wheel and mtb at 10speed and it works perfectly. The smaller diameter tyre should also fit the 27.5" frame.

Its just one wheel but you could use it for whichever bike is going to be on the trainer.

Why do you want a trainer? I am stuck on one due to injury and its destroying my soul.

Spend the money on getting your wife 10 speed, maybe buy some new sunnies, maybe just burn the money on the webber anything else really.

I actually like my trainer, work some pretty unusual hours so during the winter the only training I would get would be weekends if I didnt have it.

Sure it can get boring but zwift helps and other times its nice to ride some random exotic climb on virtual training.

Problem is it would have one cassette, and the one bike is 9spd and the other is 10spd

Agree that the real world is way better. But Cape Town winter with short days, and 3 small kids means we need an option B....

I dont think you will get around the 9/10spd issue but at least if you upgrade your wife's bike to 10spd then you would only need 1 trainer wheel that could be used by either bike.

For this to work the best option is to upgrade your wife's bike to 10 speed. The deraileurs wouldn't shift nicely at all with a mismatched cassette and derailleur.

You could use just erg mode for the bike with mismatching derailleur/cassette combo and just find a gear that works, leave it in that gear, and change the resistance on trainer - but that would eliminate the possibility of doing courses where you have to change gears. So it is possible, but limiting...

As for wheel size, no problem at all fitting a 27.5 wheel in a 29er frame. If you use a very thin road tyre there is even a chance of fitting a 29 wheel into a 27.5 frame. I personally use a 27.5 wheel with 1.1" tyre in a 26" frame - but it just just fits, so make sure before investing...

When you reside in good old Gauteng outside isn't always an option during the week, especially mtb...
