Shimano XT/XTR rear mech and shifter

I have always been a fan of Shimano. Not so much any longer.

6 months with my new Scalpel that has an XTR rear mech with an XT shifter is ruining the friendship.

From early on the shifting quality has not been good. Not precise or consistent.

My LBS has put in new cables, checked and re checked set up etc. and still rubbish.

The LBS sent the rear mech back to Shimano for a warranty replacement. The LBS gave me a loan XT rear mech while shimano took 2 months to then send back the same rear mech saying it was repaired. What exactly they wouldnt say.

Shift quality rapidly went downhill again. Now it feels more like the shifter that is sticking. My LBS is going to give me a loan unit to see if it is better.

Based on this experience with Shimano, both the poor quality of mid to top end products but also the poor response on the warranty, I am getting very tempted to move to Sram, even if its the entry level GX.

Are other people having problems with Shimano 11spd components?

Is it 2 x 11 or 1 x11?

Shimano is normally bulletproof.

However the initial XTR clutch and some XT's had issues. But this was a long time ago.

I think you need to look at a new LBS.

Remember Shimano is a very large percentage of the market. So you will always get isolated cases where there are issues. But there are so many other factors involved here. Chains, clusters, hangers, cables, routing etc - blaming the mechanism is probably the last place you should be looking...

I can agree to all above, might be a bent hanger...

Have had XT and now XTR and never had a gear not engaging.

Unless you are looking for an excuse to go 1x12..... :whistling:

Not the LBS.

Have tried another LBS and they also couldnt get it set up.

I am capable with tools and I also cant get it set up.

When I had the loan mech it worked perfectly.

My LBS has now loaned me a second hand NX 1x11 shifter and rear mech.

What a difference, it actually works.

My shifter and mech are off to Shimano, lets see what they say.

Stay with the Sram, been running a NX 1x11 setup since December, not a day's problem with shifting. Once indexed / set up properly, it stays that way.

Your LBS has probably checked, but is the derailleur hanger a direct mount hanger? And if not is the b-link attached to the rear derailleur.

I recently build a new CUBE AMS and did not realise that the frame had a direct mount hanger and attached the derailleur with the b-link to the hanger.  Took me 6 weeks to try and figure out what was wrong.

I have the XT derailleur and shifter (1X11) and it is spot on most of the time.

Clunky and stiff compared to the smoothness of my previous SRAM system, but it is precise and tough. My right thumb is also a lot stronger

often it could even be the cables, cable routing, cable sleeves and ends etc.

However if another derailleur works on the same cables and shifter then it could be the derailleur.

The new shimano XTR/DA cables are also coated - polymer I think - this I have also found to cause problems with it sticking due to the coating coming off or going "hairy" even when they are quite new. so I use the jagwire coated cables which operate a lot smoother for longer at least without getting jammed up.

I use 2x10 M980 on my 29er and 1x11 M9000 on my 650B and both operate flawlessly. So it is definitely either setup or damage or something overlooked.
