Anyone who can strip and seal Alu frames?

I know I could do this myself but living in a first floor flat, I don't have the space to wash away paint stripper and paint residue.

Anyone know anyone in cape town that could strip two frames and either car polish or clearcoat?

One is 7005 so powder coating is apparently out of the question.

Need it extremely budget friendly...

I'm pretty keen to do this as well. I was talking to the guys at The Hanger in Helderberg and they said they knew of a few guys that will acid bath them and then you just need to get decals and someone to clear coat.

I had a quote from the go to guy in CT that most people will recommend here and he is an artist but the cost was more than the frame that I'm looking to do it on.

My first few bikes (2 or 3) I bought a big piece of plastic sheeting, covered the balcony's floor and stripped the paint on that. Then just go wash it off outside, all apartment buildings have an outside tap.

Then organise a braai at a friend's place, and ask him permission whether you can come a bit earlier to string up the frame under the tree and clearcoat it there. Whilst you are enjoying the third beer give the frame a second coat.

Any decent powder coat place will have a sandblaster as well.

I had a steel frame sandblasted, acid dipped and powder coated for R700 zar out near Kuilsriver a little while ago.

I will try to dig up the details.

As he is in the western cape, if he plans to hose off the frame I sincerely hope he will use unpotable, recycled water.

Suggesting anyone use their outside tap for anything non essential at this stage is plain irresponsible.

Seriously. Go and have a look at Theewaters. We are royally effed down here

Yeah this is why I'm also trying to avoid this. A lot of water to do the job.

Ill do some more homework, I'm wary of sandblasting but media stripping would be much safer.

Use Plascon Remove All.

Paint it on, let it rest overnight.

Use water in a bucket and a rag to wash off, not corrosive or dangerous to the skin.

For extra peace of mind, use gloves when washing it off. If necessary, it can be done more than once.

I have stripped an Alu Giant frame like this.

Ps. Do a search, there was / is a whole thread about this.

A cardboard box, yellow gloves, paint stripper, a plastic scraper and some goldilocks pot scrubber will do the job.

You don't need water. But sand blasting is pretty harmless. Just google some of the paint shops in the WC and there are plenty who can acid dip or mildly strip for a small fee.

I would get it clear powder coated afterwards anyway. I'm doing my Mercer again soon, so if you're keen drop me a PM and I can take both in

My brother in law runs a Powder coat / sand blast place but won't do it for me as you need a very light product to not damage the frame and he doesn't work with it as it's pretty expensive. I think. He's seen guys go straight through tubes using the heavier stuff and with pivot holes and bearing areas I'm a bit wary of damaging anything around there. It will also give a matted finish is that is or isn't a consideration.

Will this cause damage to tiles or grout? If not, then this will be the way to go. Can do it on the balcony. Didn't realize it was such a harmless product!!! Great news!!!

I think I'll just use car wax to seal it off, not going to bother polishing but I'm wary of having corrosion spring up under clear coat.

Yeah steel and Alu is very different for stripping. And powder coating, for that matter. The mtb frame gets heat treated at 200 degrees and the powder coating happens at 400, so don't feel like messing with metallurgy.

Media blasting like soda or husks is safe to do but I can't find anyone in SA that does it.

Paint stripper it will have to be.

That is a very good point. My apologies, I didn't consider that when posting. Up here in GP we have less issues regarding water, also when I last did this was years before the water issues started so the water shortage didn't even come to mind when posting!!

Don't take my word for gospel, but I worked on my braai area's tiled serving counter, and I did not see any damage to the grout.

You can try having the frame stripped at Coating Services in Strand. They charged me about 150 to strip my frame pre-powder coat. Not sure if they will do the strip only, but no harm in asking them

Also, get Autosol from builders or any car place. polishes and seals up the aluminum nicely.

Use that on my raw frame, and she is still looking good
