Kids in Bike Seats-What Age

Asking for a mate at work:

When is the best age to start riding with a kid in a bike seat and which is the best product option.

Cycled with friends in Mankele a few weeks ago - about a month before his 2nd birthday. Kid was very comfortable in his chair - just wanted the dad to go faster. Dad cycled some stuff that I have to think twice about.

Last weekend we were in Boven (kid still not quite 2). Tracks was very muddy and they fell over once, but after a few tears (of shock more than anything else) he was all excited and wanting to go again.

Don't know the brand. But after some research they decided to go for a seat in front of Mom or Dad, rather than behind him. The logic is that the kid will be less scared of things once he start riding himself if he is used to what it looks like from that angle.

I used a WeeRide for both children, where the seat sits on a bracket parallel to the top tube. Both kids started on it as soon as they were strong enough to sit upright and wear a helmet, around 1 year of age. The problem is, as they get taller, it becomes more difficult for the rider to assume a comfortable riding position and you also have to ride with your knees slightly outward. Did lots of 5km rides like this, but any more distance caused my knees to ache noticeably.

WeeRide is perfect as you can entertain, support and control the little one. A seat at the back I would recommend from 2 year onwards. Them falling asleep is a problem for a back seat as it's uncomfortable!

Note that a Weeride won't work on a small frame as there won't be space for your legs.

+1 on the weeride

I'm lucky that I ride an XL so there's negligible difference to the way I ride.

Both kids started in it at around 1 year old - the joy of it is that there's a headrest for them that they can snooze on.

With the first child I used to go on long, relatively flat rides (20-25km).  With the second I can now do a loop of an easy enough trail (e.g. parts of Bloemendal) - the climbs are harder work (consider it extra training!) and he loves the descents (taken very cautiously!!).
