Are SA stage races too pro-orientated?

What do we want? (Don't know). When do we want it? (Sometime I suppose?).

Makes me think of the cell tower thing on Carte Blanche this last Sunday.

"We DEMAND better coverage, the cell companies are screwing us with crappy reception!!!!"

Next breath....

"Don't you dare put up more towers!!!!"

sorry  :offtopic:  but talks to the human issue here.

This is a chicken, egg and chicken situation. We want SA Pro's to rock at an international level, they need sponsors, sponsors need exposure. Sponsors will send teams to events that give better exposure to the winners etc.

I did my first MTB stage race, the Dr Evil Classic, although I was going full gas many were taking it chilled and had a lekker time. I found that by talking to people at the finish I found out their stories and what happened to them during the day and if they are doing the DC. The footage was mainly of pro's but did have a bit of everyone, this included the photos on the Facebook page.

They also got to hear about Savage and got shown how to download instagram.

So is the issue that 'SA stage races are too pro-orientated', or that the TV coverage of these races are too pro-orientated?

Looks to be the latter

Well if thats the case, is a bit sad to be honest. People moaning because they want to see themselves on TV. Well only you want to see you on TV.

Most people are interested in who's winning the races and the athletes, not some interview with a guy shoving potatoes into his mouth while trying to breath and attempting his best golfer "I just won the long drive contest" interview at the same time.

I can just see it, some dude who PVRed some stage race and then watches it over and over to see a glimpse of himself, then pauses it when he catches a long distance shot of somebody who could possible be him, and starts... "My bliksem Marietjie, nom kyk hier, gou gou, dis ek daai" and then he proceeds to try and explain to his wife how tough that climb was and  how just after that he bossed down "die beste single trek ooit" all while she is trying to not pass put from boredom and is probably more concerned about the fact he still hasn't change the lightbulb in the entrance hall.

Sounds like the Patch household has much to answer for.....

Isint it amazing how advertising has captured TV. The sponsors have to be appeased so it is dictated to us what we get to watch. So we are manipulated to watch something by an entity whos product/service we may not even be interested in.

Yes and is it not amazing how we bitch and moan if we have to pay to watch or do something. So without the sponsors we would have to pay for everything and then we would moan about that as well. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Don't be stupid, everybody is just ripping us off, constantly, everybody I tell you!

Agreed.

I also think coverage of all events are like that. It is only ever the pro riders who get interviewed or whose interviews gets aired.

Personally I think our coverage of anything other than our main sporting events (rugby, cricket, soccer etc.) really sucks...

There is another issue whereby the events have to pay to receive coverage - unfortunately its the monopoly that is RSA we live in - Just think about Telkom, Eskom etc - there is only 1 -  so no competition. They can charge what they want and air what they want...

That's why you have 300 channels and there is "nothing on the telly"...

Sorry I disagree completely. Yes, the coverage may be focused in the leaders but the cinematography and music / narration in most SA produced MTB coverage is world class.

The Advendurance races, Stage Race coverage, Fat Attack coverage and my recent favourite, the Imana Wild Ride, featured unbelievable landscapes, great "stories" and interviews of a range of competitors and all of them got me amped to ride my bike.

Have you guys actually watched some of these shows!?

What exactly do you mean by argue? I take exception to such remarks, particularly when it's not a Friday (checks watch to confirm).....!

MTB coverage has improved considerably recently yes - agreed

Road events not so much. typically a 10min highlight reel on the last S.A.Championships is hardly sufficient coverage especially for our local riders looking for some exposure. I think the problem is that the coverage we get is too little (since it is paid for by the event or organisers at huge amounts) and usually then only has the elite winner in a 20sec interview with flashes of the race due to the cost being so high and trying to cram as much in as possible.

No wonder the local guys are all self sponsoring to go race internationally - that's all I am saying.

How about broadcasting typically the S.A.Champs road race live? The whole race.

You sound like you work for a broadcaster... how about broadcasting an event because people want to see it... not because they bought a media package.
