Advice on something old, something new

Hi guys

So I'm in the market for a new (secondhand) bike with a budget of around R13 000. I had a carbon frame, which was too small, with a full campy centaur groupset and won't have mind something similar, just in my size.

I've been looking at bikes 58-60cm in size but seems the classifieds are a bit thin on that front at the moment.

Which got me thinking about maybe going the steel frame (something like this: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/277590-peugeot/ ) route with a modern groupset (something like this: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/276309-shimano-ultegra-6700-10spd/ ), leaving some change for nice wheels.

Is this doable or daft?

Have anyone experience with mixing old and new? Or any other advice would be appreciated.

Very doable and not a bad idea.

Just make sure the rear drop out spacing is 130mm and not 126mm of the much older frames.

You might get away with a 128mm spacing, but 130mm is where you want to be.

For 4k or 5k you should be able to get a nice mid to top end Italian frame and the rest you can spend on components.

I have a 1986 Colango Master with 10 Speed Campag record on. Its one of the nicest bikes I have ever ridden.

I'm riding a 1989 Daccordi Mitico, Columbus tubing with a mixed 10 speed Campagnolo groupset. The ride is sublime.

Biggest challenge was finding some Italian threaded Ultra Torque BB cups
