Looking for Recessed Cleat Road Shoes

Has anyone tried to find a good pair of recessed cleat shoes for use on a road bike?

Typically MTB shoes with SPD cleats will work, but most locally available look like, well, MTB shoes. Notable exception is the Shimano XC9, but that is quite expensive.

In larger markets they sometimes refer to commuter or touring shoes.

My main gripe with road shoes is the inability to walk in them.

Anyone have any suggestions where one could acquire such a non-mainstream item?

Ok, so far have been using MTB shoes - lace-ups.

Just looking for something more aesthetically pleasing, I guess.

Not doing something wrong or walking because tired, just want to walk into a coffee shop without looking like a duck on ice.

I've seen the Bontrager shoes - looks nice.

You also get non-slip cleats if "duck on ice" is a problem.

Highly recommend them.

Spez (and few others) have a  "rubber heel" on the back to make foot level while walking and the shimano cleats have rubber on them for no slip .. no duck walk and no sliding.

Many brand's upper end mtb shoes have become a lot less "mtb looking".

You mention the Shimano - also have a look at Specialized and Sidi.

Ok, so from reading here - there are road shoe solutions that are more walk-able than others - was not aware. My impression has always been rock hard shoes, toes pointing skywards when standing.

Those Bontrager Espresso shoes look like the bomb. Too bad not in SA.

I believe Sidi has a shoe that looks the same in road and MTB guise - except for the sole - Dragon I think?

Fizik also make some nice slick MTB shoes.

Thanks for all the hints, guys!

You could try the Shimano XC7s - they are around 40% cheaper than the XC9. I've had a set of XC7s for about a year and use them for both road and occasional MTB trails. You can still hear some clicking on tiles, but on carpet I've worn them a full day at the office and hardly noticed the difference vs. normal shoes. The top is made of a composite material that is breathable, but is also easy to wipe off mud and dust :).

Second obvious question.

Why do you want walk with a road bike?

You are doing something wrong.  :P

Yup, he should much rather go walk with his dog.. or even a cat.

Horses, motor cycles and bicycles are meant to be ridden, not to be taken for a walk!  :whistling:
