Hi I’m in still baai and damaged my derailer/ hanger or something today, so can hardly change gears. Coming into Xmas no bike shops open, and I can’t afford to lose four days of training until shops open. I’m very limited with bike mechanics. I think it is ether my derailer hanger or the part it fits into, my bike is epic comp 2018? Help urgently needed????

Most probably hanger if it keeps on skipping.

Stand behind bike and look to see whether derailer it is paralel to wheel. If not it is bent. Bikeshops normall have a tool to straIghten it.

You can try bending it back by leverging it ever so gently. Just so you know, chances of getting it perfect by hand only very slim. May also not have full spread of gears afterwards and will probably need new hanger afterwards

1. Look for other cyclists around you, someone may be able to help.

2. "Lose four days of training" if it's really really really that important, just ride in one gear.

3. Post pics of the relevant bits to enable someone to offer you advice online.

4. Don't start bending things unless you know what you're doing.

oops, sorry, didn't see it was a Spaz. You'll need a new bike.

Post a picture (from the rear)

If the hanger is bent then the best tool to straighten it is a shifting spanner. The larger the better and do it slowly. Remove derailleur from hanger first.

First diagnose the problem:

1. Use multitool to check if derailleur bolt is tight - that is the big screw that attaches it to the hanger. If you can wiggle the derailleur left and right, this is the most likely issue. If loose, tighten and try shifting.

2. Is the derailleur bent? Happens easily when bike falls on its right side. Look from the rear - derailleur wheels must be parallel to the rear wheel. It you can see it with the naked eye, then it is quite bent and may well be the reason for the jumping gears. Google "how to bend derailleur hanger back" You will get many U-tube clips which is better than reading about it.

If hanger breaks in the bending process, then use your chainbreaker tool to rig yourself a single speed and keep training.

If all else fail, go run on the beach.......the soft sand will make you fitter than riding the hills........of which there are nothing serious enough around Still Bay anyway.

Short version? Google will help you

If that fails, I'll be in Riversdal in the 25th. I have a toolbox and a bit of knowledge. I don't have a derailleur hanger alignment tool though, but I can have a look if you are willing to drive through. Pm me if needed.
