I decided to take the marshmallow off the wall and take it for a spin today...out of habit i ran my fingers over the wheel before i removed it...boy am i lucky i did.

broken spokes...as i ran my fingers down the front wheel 2 spokes popped out the rim...off to the bike shop to get both front and back checked.

it seems the nipples are corroded off...imagine flying down a hill and the front wheel collapsed.

good idea to have it checked on occasion.

Yip bike shop advised I replace ally with brass...front and back.

Something else I find with the marshmallow (anthem) the bottom gear select cable...where it goes from the frame to the swing arm it rusts...the lever gets tight ...that's how you know it's time to replace the plastic sleeve...if I wasn't concerned about the frame breaking I would drill out the brackets and fit a full sleeve which would solve the issue.

I want to do exactly this which fitting my new groupset. Any other options for full length gear housing that won't void the warranty?

Nope...unless you use zip ties all around.

Drilling out the end stops for the housing to allow for continuous housing will not void the warranty.  We are protected by the Consumer Protection act.  They would have to show that you weakened the frame to void the warranty.  Careful use of a Dremel with a ceramic cutting tool does the job perfectly.  We used to do this routinely but these days most manufacturers design for full housing anyway.

It has gone from replacing nipples to spokes because the threads are so corroded...i am thinking maybe better to find other wheels.

anyone have a set of anthem rims they want to unload at a good price...i hear a lot of people upgrade to better quality wheels.

quite sad that giant wheels (spokes and nipples) dont even last 3 years :(

Wheels sorted...leka when you got mates who help out...got a set of 5 year old wheels still in new conditions...no corrosion on the spokes...now to decide what to do with the giant wheels.

Sent a message to the shop i bought the Anthem from to see if there is any sort of warranty...my anthem was purchased new in June 2015...it has 1213.3 km recorded on Strava.

Wheels would generally be covered under a one or two year warranty - However, most manufacturers exclude any kind of corrosion as a claimable defect....

I think your LBS has you on a bit with the spokes tho as I have never had to replace spokes (I used to build/repair wheels professionally) due to corrosion - they are stainless steel after all...

I contacted the shop were i bought the anthem...i am told the spokes on the standard wheels which came with the 2015 anthem are stainless steel...it seems you are correct.

I didnt think they would be covered by any warranty after 2 years...but checked just in case...they cant confirm yes or no ...but i am not going to waste time following up...rather just spend the money and get brass nipples fitted.

even though the back wheels seems ok...i am going to get the nipples replaced with brass ones.

I've had spokes break trying to get corroded alu nipples off them. Joburgers don't know rust like us coastal folk...

The other possibility is that the amount of time it would take to strip and clean is basically the same cost as replacing the spokes, so you may as well just do it that way.
