Rust, what to do?

So I have been off the bike for a long time due to travel and illness.

My trusty stead has been sitting in the bike/laundry room gathering dust up until recently when I decided start riding again. I went out into the rain (It never really stops here) and so mucked up the bike right and proper.

When I wash the bike, on close inspection I had notices spots of rust on the chain and cassette. Both are still in good nick, rust aside.

Should I just replace both chain and cassette?

copper bristle brush - some oil (not wax) - little light elbow grease - wipe off mess ....and then oil it ibefore you go ride in the rain and dry it after with an old cloth

Thanks, so should rather spend my money on a cassette remover and maybe extra chain links.

I often wonder if I should keep the money it costs to service my bike and use it on tools to DIY?!
