Braamfontein Spruit Commuting

Hi There

 

Are there any hubbers out there who use the Braamfontein Spruit for commuting? More specifically from Parkhurst and surrounds into Sandton Central.

 

I am wanting to do this commute a couple times a week but concerned about safety so was hoping to find some others to join up with.

It would be a lovely ride but, as you say - not if you lose your shirt!

We commute using the spruit once a week to get from Victory Park (this is where we meet, coming from Parktown North and Linden) area to Midrand. Usually Thursday PM from Midrand to Home and Friday mornings back to Midrand.

Been dong this for about 4 years - not one incident... or close call.

“We” = two 6’2” guys around 100kg each, so may be a factor although it generally is pretty quiet and chill most times we ride.

That is quite a commute. I can see why you only do it once a week. Do you see many other commuters along the Spruit?

My concern exactly. Not too keen on a lovely ride becoming a lovely walk again.

I have done it fairly regularly for the past number of years - I used to get on in Linden and travel thru to 12th Ave to get to Rivonia, I have (thankfully) never had an incident on the spruit, and I have been riding along there for +-14 odd years now.

More people during the afternoon leg of the commute.

Mornings can be fairly empty especially during colder months, but we'll generally see three to four riders/groups along the way.

On days that my husband can commute with me, we use the part of the spruit between Delta Park and William Nicol. Haven't had an incident before or felt unsafe, but wouldn't want to do it alone.

 

when I commute on my own, I get out at Jan Smuts and follow Athole to Sandton.

Where about do you commute to in Midrand? Would be quite keen to join you guys if it could work out. Thats quite a hike and where/how do you go after you get to the N1 where it kinds fades out??
