Hi all.

My first post.

Hope everyone is well.

I decided to test my marriage by getting a MTB. I’ve been looking for over a months now and I still haven’t found ‘the one’ for me.

Let me give you some background. I’ve never ridden Mtb before. Well, when I was a laaitie but does that really count?

I’m a big bloke, 1.98m tall and built heavily. I decided to get into mountain biking after getting myself fit. I am planning on doing some local riding with friends and family, maby the odd off-road race here and there in the long run, nothing too serious.

I’ve done quite alot of research and I THINK I know what to look out for:

Better to buy second hand

Hydraulic brakes

Air fork if possible

10 gears in the back

Ect

Problem being, my budget is R8000. Ive been checking the classifieds daily for the past three weeks and I’ve not found anything that works for me (xl frame, in Mpu or Gau, not more than 8k) ( I live in Witbank... no jokes please!!)

Honestly, I’m tired of waiting now. I’m seriously considering doing what everybody said shouldn’t be done and buying an entry level new bike.

These are the ones that I am considering:

Titan Rouge Cruz (budget buy) R6300

Momsen AL129 (air fork) R8500

Silverback Sola 4 (a bit over budget) R8500

Silverback Spectra Comp (R7100)

Merida 40-D R7800

Cannondale Trail 5 (don’t like paying for a name) R8900

Now the BiG question, do I hang on and wait for that dream second hand deal or do I pull the trigger and buy one of these, and if the latter, which one do I buy?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In that range the bikes are more or less similar in terms of what they offer as an introduction into the cycling world.

BUT, does your R8k budget include the cycling helmet, and other goetertjies that goes with a bicycle?

No the 8k is for the bike only. I have about 2k put away for the rest. Hope it’s enough

I have the Momsem, not a bad bike for what you are paying (although shop around, I have seen it a bit cheaper than R8500).

Just note with that Momsen, its NOT a tapered headtube (if you are looking at 2018 AL129). That caught me out as it LOOKS like one!

Thanks. I like the Momsen!

Excuse my ignorance, but what are the advantages of a tapered head tube?

100% go with 2nd hand for your first bike.

You can find your limits and not worry about that first scratch. You get a whole lot more bike for your money, and you can also sell it at less of a loss when you upgrade.

Be patient, it will be worth it!

Don't try save money on anything that is directly between you and the bike or the bike and the ground. Good tyres and a quality bib will be far more noticeable than XT anything.

The R2k for extras is not nearly enough.

Going to disagree,

R 700 for helmet. (Sportsmans warehouse)

R250 for spares kit. (Tube/Pump)

Camelback from MrPrice, R 300 (put spares in as well)

Gloves R 99  Mr Price

Cycling in tekkies and shorts/t-shirt.  DON'T buy any cycling clothes in first 6 months, you loose to much weight and complete waste of money.

Mmmmmm I am not so sure R2000 will cover everything but I would suggest the most important items would be a decent pair of padded baggies and a helmet. And if you decide on the buying new you could get the bike shop to do a deal that includes a helmet.

Thanks. I like the Momsen!

Mostly because if you wind up wanting to upgrade the fork then you'll need a fork that matches your head tube and a tapered head tubes is the standard.

I know the following are slightly out of your price range, but remember, everyone is negotiable:

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/290291-2015-merida-big-nine-xt-edition-29er/

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/290663-2017-merida-big-nine-500-29er/

I would definitely look at getting the first one (if possible) as it has decent spec and will be perfect as a first bike - more than capable.

You're going to struggle to find a decent bike in your price range, but they do come along from time to time.

Good luck with the purchase and welcome to the sport - I hope you have many happy miles once you have a bike!

Thanks. I’m chatting with the Merinda owner now. Heres to hoping
