Jerky shock after one ride

I bought rockshox 30 gold rl about 6 months ago. About 2 months after I bought it, the shock starting making a clicking noise and I returned the shock. They replaced the steerer and it was good again. It’s worth mentioning that the shock probably was jerky but I didn’t notice it because I didn’t really know what exactly to expect from a shock after I’ve been off the bike for a few years.

The shock came back, and damn was it feeling good the first ride. It became jerky again within a week and I ignored it. The clicking noise came back again and I was riding it and trying my best to ignore it as well. I had some injuries during 2 - 6 months being off the bike most of the time and not riding a lot. All and all I’m pretty sure there were no more than 400km’s on the shock from 2 - 6 months.

Three weeks ago I send the shock back again. They charged me for the service kit and replaced the steerer again. Received it on Monday, and again damn was the shock feeling good. Three rides later, I’m sitting with a jerky shock again. I’m gonna be fair and say, it’s not THAT BAD, but theres a massive difference today compared to Monday. It’s like comparing cheap to expensive, best way I can describe it.

This whole thing is frustrating me so bad that I just want to chuck the bike in a storeroom and forget about it. Everytime I send it back it costs me R400 and its breaking my motivation completely to ride something I consider substandard.

Have anyone here fought some battles with the rockshox supplier? I honestly feel like giving them the shock, request that they replace the entire shock or they should shove it up their a**.

get the proof of all the times you sent it back and go gooi on social media

if its been back and fourth more than 3 times i think you need A new unit

The fact that they have been replacing the steerer every time tells me there is something seriously wrong with the fork - and replacing the steerer does not solve the issue.

I would say you are completely within your rights to insist on a new fork. If they are willing to replace the whole fork under warranty I would advise asking if you can pay in and upgrade to something like a Reba or Revelation fork - probably won't happen, but worth a shot. The RL 30 is more of a recreational fork, so don't expect too mich from it. Obviously what you are experiencing is not acceptable though.

if you're above 95kg and ride a but harder than the average joe , that may be what is causing the issue.

30mm stanchions are infants in the world of suspension

Going to droo is advisable but I'd push for A NEW replacement

My SID did something similar. It suffered from a fair amount of stiction and the dust seals/wipers came loose. Took it in for a service at an LBS. Came back. Looked good for two rides. Went south after that.

Took it to Torq zone. Serviced it (read fixed the stuff-up from the previous lbs service... Wrong oil types and volumes used...)

Had no issues after that...

Then last year I took it for another routine service at Torq Zone. They asked if the fork was out of warranty. I said yes. They said: SKF seals? I said go for it... It was a different fork since then! Smooooooooth I tell you.

Jerky how? Like it's topping out with a clunk? Or just no rebound damping? If the first, the air spring is at fault and needs replacing. If it's the damper, the lockout won't work either.

The creak is unrelated, and generally caused by the stanchions moving in the crown.

Try to Invert the bicycle for 15 minutes to see if there is an improvement.

There should be a little oil in the lower legs (5ml 10 ml) which will lube the sliders if the fork is inverted.

It is Normal for some Forks to Feel Super Slick after a service and return to normal after just a few rides. This is because they use SRAM Butter to install the lowers and seals.

you're supposed to use sram butter and if done correctly there will still be some left when the lowers get pulled off for the next service

@ droo, like jerky if I lean forward over the shock it goes down with a sudden movement, and lean a bit more it goes down with another sudden movement. It’s short bursts of travel.

Anyway, I contacted the original bikeshop where I bought it and let them know I’m beyond the point of frustration. They had it picked up at their own cost, and their confident I’ll get my replacement.

Why didn’t I do it first or second time around? I was trying to buy time for riding by using a local bikeshop. Mistake obviously, why would they fight the supplier for a good client.

Thumbs up for bikeaddict!
