What about a Cannondale Slate (with 30mm travel up front), should also easily fit some comfy 32C tires

Road bikes can be uncomfortable, depending on how smooth your roads are

I have considered gravel bikes, but IMO they are moer expensive. They need to get a bit more common and the price needs to come down before they become a real option. I will only get 10 -12 k for my MTB. These things start at 20 something and not much second hand options.

Having said that. it would be my first option if I could afford it.

Yes they are super expensive.  There is a Cannondale Slate 105 in the classifieds, but it's going for R30k

It seems to be your gear changing which seems to be the problem if I understand correctly?

Failing which, I have a road suspension stem you may want to try (28mm) which might help?

Flared Midge bar? I also have one of those if it helps you?

no its nothing to do with gear changing. its quite simply holding on.

I will definitely keep the road suspension system in mind if I go for a road bike - thank you.

I dony know what a flared midge bar is....

Something like this if I am not mistaken:

Exactly like that with shorter hand grip length.  I also have the Soma and it suits me better - big hands.

been thinking after all the advice in this thread. Swop the dual sus anthem for a (carbon) hard tail. Fit thinner road type wheels. Change the bar to something like the above or something with tri bars. This could tick most of the boxes...hmmm

Sounds good, but if it was me, I'd try ride with the possible bar setups first to see what truly works best for you.

I haven't ridden one myself, but another bar possibility to look at maybe is something like the Farr Barr.

I see your location is listed as PE.

When I bought some bidons from them they were shipped from there. Maybe they have a demo bar® ;) you could try?
