Part 1 of the South African Mountain Bike Crash Survey, presented by Gert Nel Inc. Attorneys, was widely read, shared and talked about. We expected that because a mountain bike crash is something every mountain biker can relate to. Due to the extensive nature of the survey, we split it into three parts. This second part focuses on gear. What makes people decide to buy a certain helmet or light? Which are the most popular brands? These and many more questions answered here.

A total of 1680 participated in the TREAD 2017/2018 SA MTB Crash Survey, presented by Gert Nel Inc. Attorneys. If you’re familiar with open/public South African sports surveys, you’ll appreciate that it’s a very good response. What is the sample size in relation to the size of the market? That’s hard to tell because nobody really knows how many mountain bikers there are in South Africa. Estimates range from 500 000-800 000.

At the price they are asking I'm very surprised. I have used Magic and Ryder and they are awesome and much better value.

you get what you pay for....these guys have done their research on price, technology and marketing. they're two/three times bigger than Ryder/omnico so i would say they've done their homework well.

What nonsense, more expensive isn't always better. Some people just buy into the advertising hype.

No amount of advertising hype will get you a 3rd of the market share if the product you are selling is crap

A product that delivers the light quality, build strength and durability, are not number 1 because of "Market Hype", but rather good value for money! Add excellent customer service and after sales service to the mix, and it's easy to see why people favor them.

Their products are good.

I have one and I am happy with it for the price I paid.

Can I get a cheaper product, sure, but I prefer a product with a proven track record that many people have used. And I am willing to pay for that certainty.

It is an open market, which allows all these trains of thought.

For example, gate motors. If you get a Centurion Gate Motor, you pay more. You can go out and get a Gemini, which also opens a gate, for less money, but you get what you pay for.

The fact that Centurion Systems dominates the gate motor industry tells you that consumers are satisfied with their product, few people will pay more for a product if it isn't justified, so you won't get market dominance.

Same with Extreme Lights. Marketing only gets you exposure, a good product gives you the market share.

I met HannesZ on a ride and Braai many years ago. What a lekker guy. After that I've followed his brain child's progess and have added a couple of extremelights to my quiver.

Good lights. Good value. Great support.

What a lot of people don't realise is that a lot of the cheaper lights are 4.2v systems, whereas Extreme have stayed with 8.4v. So make sure you are comparing apples with apples.
