Who works for DHL on here?

Hi I recently bought a few things from evans cycles. There was a promotion where you get the cheapest item free. Evans cycles then sent all my items separate due to the items being at separate warehouses. The free item has now been sent. The value of the item is under R1400, and due to it being a gift ( I did not pay for it) I would think they cannot charge duties on it. I did try to explain the situation to dhl, but to try and get hold of them is difficult. Is there anyone with experience in this subject who can give advice?

Thank you

VAT and duties are payable on the value of the imported goods, not on how you acquired them.

Gifts are not exempt. Regretfully you will need to pay

They are up to a value of R1400 twice a year. But its not DHLs call.

Essentially, the fact that the supplier gave you something is of little concern to customs.

EVERYTHING has a value. Customs need to know what it is.

This is done for several reasons, some of which are:

1. understanding how much trade takes place between countries,

2. Protecting any local markets that might make the same product

3. Revenue generation for the state.

Its also illegal to declare an item at a lower value to jippo the duties and VAT.
