Inseam 78cm

What’s the best size bike to buy

I have been on larges but want to find out is it to big or can I go medium

I’m in the market to get a specialized epic/camber

And what’s do you suggest must it be hardtail or softtail

I do race now and then but nothing insane and when I cycle it’s mostly road and some gravel as there isn’t much of tracks in my area

Hi. Regarding size, if you are in the market for a Epic or Camber and going to pay 50k+, then I suggest you get to your nearest Spez store and have them do a proper fit.

If you mostly cycle road and gravel, and new to MTB, get a hardtail

What he said... Paying that much for a bike get proper sizing and setup included while you there.

Also go ride both and then decide.

always difficult if you have your eye on a second hand one...

I think you are on the border between a Medium and a Large. In that case try and fit on the medium as the bike handling will be much better.

I am on the cut off between a Large and XL and have always gone for the smaller frame as long as my setup stays within all the prescribed limits for the seatpost etc.

I've just bought an new Epic Comp and had a proper fit at Specialized. They measured me at 1.82m and 77Kg and put me on a large frame with a 720mm handle bar.

I did try out a medium but felt a bit cramped in the cockpit.

Also when you try out the bikes, get them to let you try a few different length handle bars as this seriously made a difference to my riding style and confidence.

Then just be open about it at the specialized store. Tell them you are looking to buy second hand, but you are unsure which frame size will work best for you. Usually they will help you out no problem, although I know about the odd case here and there where the shop assistant treats you like crap because he knows he will not be making a sale.

Same problem here but I tend to go for the bigger frame for the comfort as I dont race to win. I ride to enjoy it. Its essential to go and ride both and see what works though.

From my experience Dual sus feels smaller in general due to the top tube angle and length. So my opinion here would be Large Dual Sus Med Hardtail. But thats just me.

If you want to buy second hand go to Spez and just get a fit on them to get a general feel before pulling the trigger

Time is money. Many times people promise that they'll buy all their gear from you and you spend hours helping them buy that second hand bike, only to never see them again.

Isn't that part of the job - 10 to 1 they will tell some of their friends which could mean some returns. 1 out of 10 is a sale so see him as part of the 9.

Fair enough. But as I reflect on my life, I realise I am probably not cut out to do sales.

Lets hope not "returns" like in bike fits for buying second hand bikes on the Hub

I'm 187 and on a large frame epic and it sometimes feel cramped- but on paper it was "fine".

edit: I'm using a Thomson Elite Setback seatpost to reduce the cramped feeling between sitting and holding the handlebars.

From other people's sizes I've read, your best bet is really to try and get a fitting MP
