I have always combined the the two disciplines and found that you have less chance of muscle injury and if you do have the recovery period is shorter  .

Today was my first time back in the saddle after being injured (dog bite) on the 19th of May. I thought I was going to suffer a lot, but was surprised by my level of performance. I expected to have no endurance, and to struggle after about 40 minutes of sustained high intensity, yet the complete opposite was true. I felt the burn initially in my legs, but gradually the burn gave way and my muscles started firing about 25 minutes in. By the hour mark, I was "jogging" out the saddle for 30 second intervals, going slightly uphill, and this was relatively easy.

My point is, that after reading the Sport2Science article, I ascribe my level of fitness / performance / strength to the fact that for the last 5 months I have been doing 3 weekly strength sessions at the gym, combined with spinning for an hour. I believe that had I not had this base, I would have been much worse off today.

yep exactly that & the chances are that you were probably due that "season break" anyway, which is usually about 2 weeks minimum, meaning if you build on your fitness from now with some more "structured training" you will likely be more stronger in a few weeks\months time, than you were 6-12 months ago. 1 step back 2 steps forward.
