Garmin 510 screen not responding

I purchased a Garmin 510 from a Hubber a year or two ago. The unit was clearly never used.

About 6 months ago after long rides, the screen would be unresponsive ie I could end the ride with the physical button but not tap 'save' (or anything else for that matter) on the screen.

I realised that if I turn it off for a few hours, screen functionality returns and I can then save the exercise.

Last week it happened again and even after a few days, the screen would not respond. Neither a soft not hard reset solved the problem.

I have just switched it on after about a week and it now works, but I would nonetheless like to resolve the issue as I know it will return.

A web search reveals that this is a very common issue with the 510.

Question is, is it worth it?

Obviously I have no warranty claim. I don't want to spend the R150 admin fee charged by Sportsman's Warehouse only to receive a prohibitively expensive quote from Garmin to repair it.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Any input welcome

Thank you!

My Garmin 510 gave me hassles eventually also buying it off a fellow Hubber. I sent it off to Garmin which they couldn't repair and they offered me a new 520 bundle deal. Think i paid around R2k at that stage which was well worth it. This was around 14mths ago. So the price could be a slightly more...  The 520 is a decent unit and very user friendly.

I've several people complaining about Garmin Edge reliability lately. A few guys ride with have had units fail mid ride. I.e.the unit(s) stop recording mid ride or screen goes blank / haywire.

Saw a guy cursing his Garmin edge 1000 during the epic when the screen froze and the unit gave him 3pages of data overlayed before it failed.

Personally I'll stick to my stages dash as it has been faultless as is the wahoo bolt my pal uses. Also good reports on Sigma Rox 11.0.

Based on other users experience Garmin seems to be a never-ending pit of buying new units at warranty upgrade cost. Guy in lbs last night said he's onto his 4th Edge 1000, two of which failed just out of warranty so he's spent nearly R17,000.00 JUST to record his cycling data. This can't be a good thing to buy into

Had the same problem with my 510. Emailed Garmin and was told the unit needs to be send in for software update.did it myself and it did sort it out for a while but on warm days the touchscreen doesn't respond at all.

have had a 500 for about 5 years or so with not one minutes hassle or problem..except for loss of info on day3 of Sani due to me not charging it the night before.

Just about to upgrade to a 520 though.....

The old edge 705 and the 500 were based on the same chip set I'm told and hence the great reliability the Garmin name was built on.

Everything since then seems to be a lottery

Had a 500 for over 5 years until I cracked the screen, have had a 520 under Garmin's replacement policy for 2 years without issue.

If we giving Garmin a bashing, there are always 2 sides to a story.  I have also had the Fenix 3 and upgraded to the Fenix 5 both of which have been trouble free.

I guess some people are just lucky in the lottery you mention, there again some people are all thumbs when it comes to gadgets!

R12kfor purchase of initial bundle

2 x R2450 for out of warranty good will replacement units

Comes up to just shy of R17k.

In 4years.....

Oke was enquiring about Sigma Rox 12.0 because of his experience with edge 1000.

How would a user influence software failure?. Garmin support forum is full of software issues with the units especially post software update

Like all things, devices are machines

And machines fail

Garmin after-sales support have been fantastic over many seasons

That matters

9 out of 10 of my training partners uses the brand

And the street cred is strong

This thread is not in any way intended to bash Garmin. From what I have seen on the forums their backup has been exemplary.

I just wanted to get some opinions on other people's experience WRT backup for a 2nd hand purchase like mine.

Thank you for the responses!

Not bashing Garmin. It is what it is. You'll buy a "warranty upgrade/Goodwill" unit from them. It will come with a 90 day warranty as the warranty will be attached to the unit you bought 2nd hand  that failed.

If your new unit fails outside of 90days tough luck you're in for another "goodwill replacement" @ around R2000. How many goodwill replacements will you go through before you end up with a keeper? Might be 1, maybe 3 , maybe more? Factor in the price you paid for the unit you bought plus the goodwill replacement unit cost(s) and does it make sense to you to spend that much? Seems like a bit of gambling here. Maybe rather cut your losses and buy a new unit with a full 1 year warranty? Evobikes selling the Edge520 unit for R3995 and the Bundle for R4995

The warranty process is also much slower now than it was a year ago as you will have to send the failed unit back to Garmin in JHB where it enters the warranty queue. Factor in the courier time and costs.

If anything bombs on my Stages Dash, Omnico is Cape Town based and they're very good with warranty issues in my experience (Stages PM had to be replaced under warranty and the experience was a quick and painless one). I'd definitely consider a Sigma or Stages before a Garmin now based on the less convenient warranty process Garmin SA has put in place and the reliability experiences of many people around me. One of my pals has switched to SRM's PC8.

I learned many years ago to never make a purchase decision based on only good repors but too rather more heavily consider the reports and  challenges faced by people who have had issues and how those challenges were resolved to ensure the customer has a happy experience. I think Garmin's "street cred" was built on units like the Edge 705 and Edge 500 and having a service agent in every major city. That's  no longer the case.

In your case this is what it will cost you:

I ended my ride once with a firm push on the 510 screen. The firm push also ended the screen. Took it to Navworld (Maitland) and was told they didn't repair and I could pay R1750 for a 520 (and they gave me everything but the HR strap from a new bundle).

I worked out that the price of the 510 (CWC special at the time) and the 1750 was less than the price of a new 520 bundle. 520 has been rock solid since

I managed to solve. I think this will work.

I gave the usb to your computer and then press the lower two buttons. After that, I pressed the power button. About 10 seconds after I pressed the three button. After basic setting on.
