Fox Hill really isn't that bad. I have a mate who moved himself and his family to Europe in the past year, the same mate who introduced me to mtb in '08. He used to say how Fox Hill was a section of the route to be weary of. In 2012, for me it was Inchanga, Drummond and Bothas Hill that gave my legs an eina.

True, Fox Hill isn't that bad by itself.

But couple it with a bunch of Alphabet Soup Racing Snakes that want to drop the fatties and suddenly it gets quite intense so early on in the event.

It is part of the nature of the race because if the fatties make it to the final 30km with the lead group then they take the sprint finish. Fox is the only extended climb section on the route where they can put the hammer down for 20+ minutes to effect the split.

PS. Getting seriously excited now, last couple of work days before we roll off the line :)

Was looking at the weather

50% chance of rain but 23km of wind - FML lol

Yep, most weather websites predict wind for PMB and DBN, so would be best to stick with a group on the day.

As for rain, no conclusive predictions thusfar. I'll take al the necessary kit down and decide on the morning itself what to wear. We had a slight drizzle at the start last year, wasn't an issue at all.

My main concern is my experience in the rain which is zero coupled with slicks lol - should be rather hairy hahaha

Excellent, thanks for confirmation.

Town hill is a nice descent, but I preferred this descent the last time we rode to PMB.

The Sweetwaters descent you mentioned is a way wiser choice at the moment as the steeper more direct Old Howick currently looks like the surface of the moon and unless you know the road very well becomes very dangerous at 80kph.

I ride this race a while back and it was a great race. I got dropped on a climb and the marshall in the car did not allow me to ride with the group coming from behind.

Makes sense, especially if it is a small lead group. Don't want you to interfere in the outcome of the group. Will reconsider my tactics to enjoy the day out.

This is generally only applicable to the racing batches $,&,%,VA,VB,VC,TL

the weather has been good the last few years, so maybe it will hold up.

The will be wind, there always is when coming into Durban on the M13 after Hillcrest. Make sure to stay in a group here if you can, otherwise you will lose a big chunk of time if you out there all alone.

Just to clarify, the Old Howick Rd is potholed, whereas the longer detour right at the Old Main Brewery via Sweetwaters is better?

Yes that is correct.

I have not come down the longer right detour but ride up it fairly regularly and they re-tared the pretty much whole road.

Thank you gents.

We’re staying in Prestbury, so it’s also more convenient to use the Sweetwaters road.

2 more work days left, then it’s bike o’clock for 4 days.

Does anyone know where I can get my coffee fix before the race? I know about the MacDonald's but i am looking for something a bit stronger that tastes like coffee?

There's a Seattle Coffee @ Caltex about 2.1Km from the start - at the car dealers opposite the Midlands mall. Not all are the same, but they are 10x better than the Big M.

Thank you so very much, fresh coffee is essential before the start!

Can't go wrong with Seattle
