don't know what causes the noise, but you replace this stuff waaaay too often...

I don't even think about changing a chain before 3000 km's. and have done 10000 km on a roadbike chain & cassette before...

Also, do you use wetlube?

On my road bike, I normally replace my chain every 5000km, and normally use 4 chains before replacing a cassette. My last set of chain rings got me around 40000km.

But I do agree that the OP is replacing his stuff far too often. My xx1 chain is currently at around 1000km and no where near needing to be replaced.

You the OP changed the chain now it's grinding. Pop the old chain back on, the grinding should be gone. If it is ride the old chain till it breaks which should be years from now

Hi. I have the same issue... Running a 1x10 with a xt cassette and kalbo 32 front chain ring. Chain checker indicated that chain was worn so I removed old chain and put on new. Had a grinding noise... Tried new chain, no change. Tried new cassette, no change. Tried used kalbo 34 chain ring, no change. Going to order a new rapide chain ring, hopefully that sorts out the problem!

Just a follow up from me - new rapide chain ring ordered yesterday afternoon and delivered this afternoon - fitted this evening and test rode - no more grinding sound! Ciao.

Can you give a bit more info please...

It sounds like you are running a 1x setup?

- what drivetrain components?

- what chain?

- can you try and identify where the sound is coming from? (More to the front/rear?)

I’ve seen issues with derailleur wheels that are worn/loose, or worn BB, that allows some lateral movement - especially under heavy load...

Im running 1x11, cannondale spidering 32t in front, 10-46 xt at the back with xtr rear deralieur.

Chain basically brand new, cluster approx 800km. New 2nd hand chainring which should have been as new.....

Sound coming more from the front. My BB was also replaced approx 3 months ago.

"Ok, i normally replace my chain approx every 800km or before my chain checker gets to 0,75. My rule of thumb is 2 chains on a cassette, and 2 cassettes to a blade (in front)."

Your lbs must like you lots. I am on arround 2500km with GX Eagle and chain shows no wear.

I get that on my roadbike, but def not mtbike.

If it's the same problem I had on two bikes welcome to the world of xt 1x11. It took me months of frustration and lots of money on the one bike only to find out that the problem was me and cleaning the bike wrong. My problem was the chain had to be clean all the time. I was washing the dirt into the chain between the bush and pin of the links. New lube could not get in and trapped the dirt in there causing the the worst grinding sound you could think of. Now I only clean the chain when I start to get chain suck from all the old lube and dirt. After that it's a few rides of grinding till the new lube works into the chain pins and bushes.

I wash my bike after almost every ride, my cassett and chain is clean so cannot be that. I, going for the chainring as most ppl has advised

Im currently staying in Denmark, so my rides can vary with mud and snow, which i guess impacts my chain life. On my roadbike i get 2500km plus, mtbike not so much...

try taking the chain off and washing in petrol every now and then. gets everything out

Same-same here. Just replaced cassette and chain on my MTB and first (short) ride heard a grating sound.  Second ride, today, discovered it's the chainring that isn't meshing properly with the new chain, especially under pressure.  Just a few teeth that look wonky.  Meh. Will change that and am pretty sure it will be resolved.

800km on a chain? I know some people are ocd over this stuff but this is just throwing money away. I do 5000km on a road bike and probably 3500km on a mtb. And even then it could probably do more. Don’t waste your money is all I’m saying.
