Dirkitech Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Hello Hubland. I jumped in head first again and come across something new I don't understand.I purchased a 10 speed ultegra groupset with direct mount rim brake calipers. In the photos below, the bolt and nut for the front brake is too short (the position of the photo is roughly the reach inside the fork mounting hole; the nut for the rear break seems too long and sticks out of the frame bracket (unless it is normal and should be like that). Can I please get some advice on what to do to get the brakes mounted correctly?Front:Rear:
bertusras Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Stupid question, but are you sure you don't have the brakes back to front?
JacBrand Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Long bolt goes in the fork, short bolt is the rear brake.
Eldron Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Technical correction - those are not direct mount brakes - those are good old SLRs. The threaded portion of the brake is standard but the allen key nut on the back comes in different lengths to fit the frame & fork. A new brake set comes with a couple of options - your LBS should have hundreds lying around - take them a 6 pack of beer.

shaper Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Long bolt goes in the fork, short bolt is the rear brake. What he said. Also chat with you LBS, they will have a bunch of different length allen key nuts, so you should be able to find suitable
Simon123 Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 the answer here is DISC BRAKES. and 1... 2... 3...
Dirkitech Posted August 22, 2018 Author Posted August 22, 2018 Stupid question, but are you sure you don't have the brakes back to front?Unless you mean that I had the rear brake facing the sky last night The one caliper has a longer bolt to it so I assumed it must be the front one, otherwise I couldn't distinguish any differences. Technical correction - those are not direct mount brakes - those are good old SLRs. The threaded portion of the brake is standard but the allen key nut on the back comes in different lengths to fit the frame & fork. Dirkitech Posted August 22, 2018 Author Posted August 22, 2018 the answer here is DISC BRAKES. and 1... 2... 3... Fortunately unfortunately the frame doesn't have disc brake caliper mounts and the wheels are rim brake, but I know that was meant to be comic sans!
