Your kids' school socks or your work socks should be fine.

Neutral colours go with everything. 

No need to spend anything more than R40. That's just crazy!

Falke for my cycling and running. Picked up a load on special for R30 a pair sometime back. Pep for everything else for me.

Using cycling specific socks I've noticed that the more expensive they are the faster I go, first noticed it with the mates I ride with and I was struggling to keep up using my MrP socks. Swapped to Versus and I was noticeably faster, not hanging on the back so desperately anymore. I even managed a nod or two at my new found speed.

 

I'm saving up now to try and break the R300 range for socks. I can't wait to see the speed improvement, maybe I'll even be able to lead the odd hill or two.

I believe the speed increase comes from having to peddle/work harder in order to justify to your wife/spouse/partner why you spent so much money on socks

Only socks I ride with. Only socks anyone would ride with if they put function over fashion. Lightest, coolest, fastest. First time I saw the current trendy long socks at a cycling store I thought to myself; "why the hell are they selling rugby socks at a cycling store?"
