Parkruns are enormous - why not try and organise a few people to join the march for some extra miles after the run?

Our initial approval was straight up van riebeeck to holy rosary and back but now there is some festival thing in the centre of town near de bakery. The chairman was going to check with the traffic department to find out if we need to change our route or what's the deal.

good thinking captain. I'll ask the Run Director if she can make an announcement on the morning. We have average 150 people only at Edenvale but at least it's local people.

Ok cool so it's not too far from the start and end point. Any extra souls will be greatly appreciated.

An update below

Our "March for Awareness" has had a couple changes in detail based on the approvals given by EMPD.

We have to start at 10am  and our route will be a little different.

We will be accompanied by EMPD officials and Mamba.

Our normal club ride will happen. Luso have asked if they can join us for our club ride as a show of solidarity. We will have various other groups joining us too ... so I think we might just have a march on our hands

We would like all our cyclists to:
‍♀Wear your work clothes for the match and your helmet
‍♀ push your bike for the walk
‍♀ wear placards that "humanise" you... "I am a mom", "I am a teacher", "I am a husband"

We would like your friends and family to
‍♀  wear something comfortable with placards that relate to you ... "My friend is a cyclist", "My brother is a cyclist"

Our aim is to show other road users that we are people ... with loved ones, with lives that have meaning, that we are part of the community.

We will have posters with road cycling stats to draw attention to the fact that we are fragile and that we break.

Edenvale town centre is hosting the Festival of Lights on the same morning at 11am. They will allow us to finish our walk with a few words using their facilities.
Feel free to check out the markets afterwards.

I think that covers everything.
I will include our official press release and details for your further information.

If you have any queries or concerns ... please drop me a note

Take care, be good and be safe

Kindest regards
Sam ‍♀

PRESS RELEASE

EDENGLEN CYCLING CLUB

MASS MARCH TO PROMOTE CYCLIST ROAD SAFETY AND COMMEMORATE DEATH OF 2

CYCLISTS KILLED IN EDENVALE IN OCTOBER

EDENVALE, 6 NOVEMBER 2018

The Edenglen Cycling Club (ECC) has been informed by the authorities that it

is permitted to hold a march in the town centre this Saturday 10 November

2018.

Said ECC joint chairman Samantha Gailey - "We are really saddened to have

lost two of our members in accidents in October 2018. We believe something

must be done to avoid further deaths. We have for some time been aware of

the lack of awareness on the roads of drivers, who through no fault of their

own, have not been taught about the relationship between cyclists and

motorists on the roads. We find that cyclists who drive, drive in a

markedly different way when encountering cyclists on the road, than do

non-cyclist drivers.

Lack of understanding creates division. We want to start to build

understanding between motorists and cyclists who must, of necessity, share

the roads. Hence our public march this Saturday entitled, CYCLISTS ARE

PEOPLE TOO. The insulation of a driver in a vehicle tends to dehumanise

those around the driver, especially in crime-ridden Gauteng. We seek to

publicly show that cyclists are people - husbands, mothers, sisters,

children, salesmen, doctors, teachers and the like. In humanity and

humility, we find mutual respect for each other, and we want to demonstrate

this.

We call on all caring people to join us on Saturday 10 November 2018, at

corner Van Riebeek and Andries Pretorius Streets in Edenvale, we will gather

at 10am and follow a procession through the streets of Edenvale. Join us in

our quest - we seek to build bridges with motorists, not burn them".

The Edenglen Cycling Club is a non-profit voluntary organisation

representing in excess of 200 members and their families and organises

marshalled club rides starting at the Malagueta Restaurant in Hurlyvale,

every Saturday and Sunday morning.
