Hi everyone

Has anybody done this? Unsupported?

If so, any tips, guidelines I should follow as there are plans afoot come August.  I have done the Google thing but would also prefer to listen to the Hub members. (give and take some wise cracks)

I really would appreciate any advice/suggestions from any knowledgeable people in this regard?

Thanks

Google maps directions tells me it's a 4 day cycle. I'm sure there must be a fair bit of information on this as it is a common challenge

Yes, lots of stuff but mostly with groups using a tour company charging an arm and a leg.  Incredibly expensive, as you should well know.

I would rather do it solo and using campsites.

We did a shorter route in June last year from London to Edinburgh.

Bought cheap bikes off Facebook Market, pumped the tyres and pedalled. Stayed at backpackers, B&B's, etc along the way, and fed ourselves at whatever pub we came across.

We were the only suckers heading north, and it was a headwind all the way.. So north to south is my recommendation.

The Cycle routes are clearly marked, so it is just a case of figuring out which ones you want to follow, and then looking out for the route markers.

This link is very helpful for planning and you can also buy the maps - https://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map

The bike I bought had a rack, so I borrowed panniers, this was very convenient, and also allowed me to carry far too much kit! We did it over 9 days, so probably averaged around 100 kays per day.

Enjoy the trip and post the Relives on here! We will hopefully be doing Edinburgh - as many distilleries as possible - Glasgow next year June..

If you can deviate a bit from the route, The Wrynose and Hardknott Passes in the Lake District are well worth a gander, and so is Strata Florida in Wales.

And always make sure you know where the closest Halfords is!

Hi Tom

If I may, give you a shout closer to the time once I have firmed things up a little?

Final touches, so to speak.  All systems go for August.

hanks for your input.

That's odd, because generally the prevailing wind is from the south west heading up the country. You may have just been unlucky.

Frequency of NE winds increases around May & June. We happened to find them!
