Stocked at some Makro / Game stores for R500. Seems like a decent deal, would you buy / ride with this lid?

Correct! 10 cent head......10 cent helmet.

Rather spend a bit more for a reputable, trusted make and have peace of mind!!

My question is if your helmet is CPSC certified what makes a 2k helmet better than a 700 Rand CPSC helmet.

Exactly... if it's certified it should be ok.

I see that the Bell Nomad Mips sells for about R1000. So it's twice the price, but having Mips is an advantage.

Usually lighter and with better ventilation

Check out the Video Fixture. Also MIPS. Got one last year at Solomon's for 800

I've seen better helmets at cheaper prices from lbs - last purchase was at northcliff cycles and infinitely better than what this one seems like.

Not to come off as a hypocrite - I did cycle with a raleigh helmet for a few years after starting out. It looked 95% like this one, just a different colour scheme. It was an awful few helmet years, would never want a raleigh again after experiencing comfort and reliability with a new helmet.
