MTB Helmet questions

Hello peoples of this here forum

Soooo I have a cheap helmet at the moment because I don’t really ride long distances and 11/10 times I have fallen it was to the side, but I know how important a helmet is,especially if I want to ride at events and longer rides.

I’m a little confused over the whole visor thingy situation ? I keep seeing “you are going to want to take it off” (or something like that) on the internet ...

Now I’m going to need some sun protection for my face,or at least for a while until my skin has adapted to the sun again. I played hockey for a really long time and I know from that experience that there is no sunblock I can’t sweat off of my face within 30 minutes. (And I don’t want sunblock x sweat running over my sunglasses.)

So what to do ? Do I get a helmet without a visor, and wear a hat under it ? Do I get a visor and wear it till my skin has gotten used to sun again ?

Help and advice would be appreciated !

My advice would be to get the best possible helmet you can afford with or without visor.

What kind of riding you do will also play a role in what helmet will work best for you.

I ride predominantly mtb and I personally prefer trail helmets as they tend to give better protection n the side of your head as well as lower down in the back of your head. They also often have a built in visor for sun protection and u get use to it quickly.

That said your average trail helmets tend to lack in ventilation so you tend to sweat like a pig in them. If you shop around you can find well priced well ventilated units like the Titan Shredder though or have a look at what Scott bikes have in their range, they have quite a variety at different price levels.

Thank goodness you mentioned it,I didn’t know there’s more than just either road or mountain bike helmets ! I’ll give that a look, thank you

Spoiler alert. The answer is the spez ambush helmet with a gutr sweatband and proper sunglasses. Always use sunblock. Scattered UV still packs a punch on your skin and eyes.

Halo head bands are great - expensive but work properly. You can get them at a good cycling shop. they have a gutter that runs across the front length which stops the sweat from going in your eyes.

WRt the SunblocK: Dont BS yourself around the sunblock thing - skin cancer kills. Use a high factor all the time. Your skin cannot protect itself and if you have been doing what you are doing you are probably already at risk. Use good sunblock all the time and on your face unless you want to look like a leathery old crone in 10 years time. A Halo stops it from running in to your eyes, reflected sun from the road or water will overcome any peak.

WRT the helmet a visor is nice to keep sun off/out of your eyes when its low on the horizon. If you are a social cyclist ,then its always worth it.

Dont skimp on the helmet - you can fall sideways at 10 kmh on to something very hard.

And dont wear hats under helmets unless you really want the noob fashion police to look down their nose at you. This negates all the cooling channels in  a helmet and makes you a lot hotter.

I have found that I don't need to use suncream on my face for cycling (road or MTB). The helmet (no visor) and looking downwards a lot keep the sun off.

I think the highveld sun has a bit more sting, but thanks for mentioning !

Thank you,I’ll have a look for the band and see what I can find for my face. (Wearing long-ish gear and sunblock for the skin still open).

Another vote for having a look at the SCOTT helmets.

We use their "well ventilated" range of helmets.

It does have a small "peak" in the front.  It simply WORKS !      And it is actually affordable ....

On the odd occasion we ride straight into the rising sun mid-trail, just drop your head enough to so the peak keeps the sun out of your eyes and you can still see where you are going.

Must admit, I have never considered the protection it provides against sunburn.

Thank you ! I will definitely go try one on at a local store, even if it’s just to get the size. I only think about the sunburn because I haven’t played outdoor sport in YEARS,so my skin is still a little sensitive.

Just pulling your leg a bit there. I know that most spez stuff are very well thought out and are good quality products, I'm just not very familiar with their range.
