Jaquesdp Posted February 22, 2019 Share Im looking for a GPS that can give me a constant full map while riding.. Can the Edge520 do this or only if you load the selected route ?
Schnavel Posted February 22, 2019 Share It can definitely give a full map of the area while riding. The standard Garmin maps loaded aren't great, but there are many free 3rd party maps which can be loaded to give better detail. The only issue with the 520 pertaining maps, is the limited storage space (it doesn't have a SD card slot like the 820 etc.), so you can only have a limited number of maps on at anyone time. I normally just download the map of the area I'm travelling to in advance and then off I go.

Slowbee Posted February 22, 2019 Share Im looking for a GPS that can give me a constant full map while riding.. Can the Edge520 do this or only if you load the selected route ?If it is a map you are after then get a GPS, dont get a cycling computer. The etrex 30x series has fully fledged map capabilities and you can load tracks4africa on it (T4A is well known in the 4x4 community and motorbike cirlces) and basically has every single little road, path, track ridden, walked or cycled by a human. The etrex 30x also lets you add HR and I think cadence. The screen is great and easy to see directions. BUT, being a GPS it does mapping first, exercise stuff second. And it runs on penlights, 22 hrs per set of 2. If you want power and HR and laps and avg this and avg that and all the cycling related stuff, then a cycling computer is perfect. But remember at heart it is a cycling computer first and a GPS second. Sort out which you want and go with that. I already have the Edge 520 but want maps to be showed like my Car Gps Try the link I sent above - I had it on a microSD in my 800's and 810's. Haven't actually bothered with the 820 yet. Bateleur1 Posted February 22, 2019 Share cool thanks everyone.. I already have the Edge 520 but want maps to be showed like my Car Gps Sounds like you want your bread buttered on both sides . I have the 820. But I wanted a cycling computer with GPS mapping functionality. I only use the mapping when I am trying out new roads and need to orientate myself in a new area. Other than that i do not used the mapping so often. I normally preload new routes as well. If I want a big GPS like in a car my bike will look like a stole a tray from the roadhouse. Mtb2009 Posted February 22, 2019 Share I followed the instructions in the video below for my Edge 520 and was able to download maps to it. The space on the device is quite limited.

Slowbee Posted February 25, 2019 Share cool thanks everyone.. I already have the Edge 520 but want maps to be showed like my Car Gps Like your car GPS, you mean a view from an angle that you follow an arrow? Or you mean the view from the top and you follow the arrow ? An etrex30x is your answer. Speak to the guys at EasyGis who also run buycycle (I think). Best service and advice in town. https://www.easygis.co.za/
