Commuting daily / Training interference ?

I used to commute 2 times a week, motorcycle the other 3.

As of this week I will be commuting full time 5 days a week.

Commute is around 17 km and 290m climb in the morning and about the same the afternoon back. And not a serious or strenuous exercise. Just a lekker ride !

Weekends I normally ride my long rides, pushing a bit more( most weekends a 50 to 80 one day and a 30 to 50 the other) with the occasional 100+

Oh all rides are on MTB.

My question is does these commutes  have any negative impact on training? I’m currently training for Sani.

Like Fanie says, you need to allow time to recover.

You can make your commutes real easy, by taking it slow, which will be good for your week-end rides, where you can then push harder.

After a hard week-en ride, using the commutes as active recovery will be of great benefit.

I commute 4 day a week on road bike and Fridays take car in weekend I do long rides. Rest is very important as well giveing body time to recover. Trust me you don't want to come race day then you Curtain.

Training for Joberg2C.

My commute takes me through the Spruit with a huge variety of distance/ascent options, so commuting days count as proper training. My issue was that 2 * 40km is not the same as 1*80km ride, so I had to scale up the weekends, and therefore scale down the commuting to allow for recovery time.

Will get back to more commuting and less weekend-rides from beginning April again.

For Sani2C, maybe you could take a rest day on either Saturday or Sunday? Then make 2 or 3 of your commutes count - intervals or maybe hill repeats if there's a  safe place to do so? And then the other commutes slower.

Is it your first Sani?

Where do you commute?

Randburg to Sandton - that's where I also commute. Must have seen you in the Spruit at some point - my husband and I are on 26ers. Lime green helmets.

Yesterday morning we left a bit earlier and did a loop through Emmarentia, then down to William Nicol where we got on the tar. Same thing in the afternoon; it gave us just over 70 for the day. Next 2 weekends we've got some events planned, but after that we'll tone down on weekend-riding and mostly use the commute as training.
