Jonkershoek route advice

I'm keen to ride jonkers on Thursday. Just checking if it's open, considering the epic going there.

I see that Armageddon is the old canaries. Is iron monkey the old double black that has been there long time?

Epic only going through on Sunday, so it will be open.

Yup, Armaggeddon = Canaries, Iron Monkey = Double Black.

Craig, enjoy Jonkershoek, but it's very different to Gspot, especially as you climb higher on either side of the valley. Above the second contour expect loose stones, rocky drops, off camber turns, steep drops next to the trail, no chicken runs. Gspot is a skate park, the upper slopes of Jonkers are proper mountain bike riding.

How does Armageddon, Iron Monkey compare to Hoogies Cobra? I have not ridden those two yet, and did Cobra again today.

Armageddon is substantially longer, but overall I'd reckon about the same ito difficulty.

Haven't done iron monkey in a while, so can't really comment on that.

Armageddon similar to Cobra.

Iron Monkey has substantially bigger rock gardens at the top, some flow sections with jumps, and an about 1.3m rock drop. All rideable, and rock drop is avoidable.

If you can manage Armageddon comfortably you should be able to make it down Iron Monkey, with maybe one or two sections you will have to walk or just scope out. The progression from Armageddon to Iron Monkey is not too much/difficult.

In my opinion Iron Monkey is much closer in diffulty to Armageddon than say Plumber or Status Quo.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I rode Cobra again after being of it for quite some time, and it felt easier than I remember it to be, but I ascribe that to improvements in my skills base. But then, if Armageddon and Cobra are similar, then Epic riders are going to have some rather sketchy moments come Sunday (after 600 odd kilometers and 15000 odd meters of vertical ascent in the legs).

It might be worth taking a trip there on Sunday just to watch the carnage unfold...

So I did Armageddon from the top as well as Firehut.

The ride was definitely tough as nails.

The guys who were saying "30km in Jonkershoek is no joke" were absolutely correct.

The sheer height of the trails was what got me. None of the other trails I've ridden in Cape Town give you that kind of altitude.

I just about shat myself looking down over the edges on the top few sections of Armageddon and some parts of Firehut. I'd hate to know what happens if you go off the side.

I'd never compare the difficulty of Armageddon to Hoogies Cobra. I've only done the Cobra recently, and I heard that its been cleaned up a lot and is a lot easier than it used to be. That's the only version of Cobra that I've done, but I have to say that its a heck of a lot easier than Armageddon. The Cobra is a smooth flowy trail now from what I recall.

But did you die!?

seriously though. How did you like it?

I loved it!

It was particularly exciting because it was my first time back in Cape Town after moving to Joburg at the start of this year.

I hadn't seen a hill in months. So Jonkershoek really was a breath of fresh air. I'd been craving some downhills.

Its funny.. I've noticed that a fair amount of guys in Gauteng seem to be riding trail bikes... Where do they take them? I think the stair case down to the ground floor from my apartment is the most exciting downhill I experience when I go for a ride

Hakahana, spruit, etc etc etc. You're right that it's flat, mostly, but there are places you can go.

Double Black? Serious? I thought that was a blue ride.

Apparently I just missed Hakahana. I heard it closed recently.

Spruit? Like Braamfontein Spruit? The only bit of downhill that I've found on the Spruit is at Delta Park, but its all of 200m or something. Or have I been missing out on some fun somewhere.

Edit: Oh, maybe you're talking about Wolwespruit? I've heard that that's an awesome place to ride. Definitely doing it this weekend of the weather is good enough

Double black was just the name of the trail that used to be there, not the grading of the trail. Iron Monkey is the name of the new/worked on trail - just a black in terms of grading, and by far the easiest black in Jonkers. If you want a double black go down Status Quo.
