Always used BMC for wheels.

Been a while since last build though so not too sure who's doing their wheels now.

Any hub that uses larger bearings like Hope or dt

 

Rims anything that's gravity oriented like Ztr flows, wtb frequency i29s or even spank 395s

Ja I use Hope on my MTB's, but I saw no mention of MTB wheels in the OP.

good reliable wheels is not just about the hubs and rims but also about the spokes and number of spokes and lastly spoke tension. For bigger guys, anyone over 90kg 32Hole should be the starting point, spokes with 2.0mm threaded section and head before the j-bend of mushroom head and not less than a 1.6mm middle section. Then the rim doesn't matter so much unless you go for silly lightweight Aluminum rims.

Alex, DT Swiss, Notubes all make cost effective robust products. Mavic has updated  their alloy MTB rim tech and remain a very good option with the EN827, EN 427 and E-XM430
