If the last 12 months is any indication, then probably another 4 months before he can ride the Mongoose. Well, he can actually pedal it ... but stopping poses a few logistical problems ....

NO issue with our conversion. Currently a 32 in front. Visually a 36 may possibly cause clearance issues, though this is a non-issue for us at this stage.

And i agree on the 36t, with a 50 tooth you can still really climb but you have that top end i feel like most mtbs are missing out on (except for the 9t and 10t cassettes). I run a 36 round with a 11-42 and even that is fine with me.

Yeah the difference would be huge. Now you guys can just put the seat back and higher as he grows. Happy riding.
The Ouzo Posted May 29, 2019 Posted May 29, 2019 i could never see the appeal of a 1x setup.But the new road bike has taken me from a 3x8 to a 2x11 with the small chain-ring effectively only there for really steep climbs, so you're basically using it like a 1x with an "in case of emergency" gear, what a pleasure to only have to worry about the rear gears. And then when on a MTB I can imagine not having the complexity of a front derailleur also makes things so much simpler.
