BB30A Bottom Bracket

Hi

I have a Cannondale frame that uses the BB30A bottom bracket standard. It comes standard with BB30 bearings pressed into the frame. I am using a crank with a 30mm Spindle However I am looking to replace these bearings with a shell type design that mates with thread in the middle.

So far I thought the following two options might work with removal of the frame bearing retaining clips.

E-THIRTEEN BB30 BOTTOM BRACKET ( not sure if the outboard bearing location on this will cause a problem with crank spacing and chainline )

TOKEN TF37 Thread Fit Bottom Bracket PF30 to BB30, or BB386 to BB386 (Threaded)

Looking for Any suggestions or experience with this

I don't think that this will work.  Unless I am missing something the BB30A shell is 73 mm and any BB30 screw type BB will have outboard bearings making it wider still. Is your crank axle going to be long enough?  Also to the best of my knowledge PF30 BBs are not compatible with BB30 frames.

A PF30 BB is 46mm outside diameter so it will not fit into a BB30A frame which is 42mm diameter.

The E-thirteen unit also will not work because the bearing land on the cranks axle will not match with the placement of the outboard bearing of the E-thirteen bb..

The Token Tf37 BB386 or PF30 will not work as it will not fit inside the frame

You basically will need to stick with a BB30 bottom bracket if you want to retain the 30mm axle crank

Thanks for the feedback, yes I forgot the PF30 is a wider diameter bearing. Seems like little to no options availble for threaded design type BB.I see "BB infinite" and "Cbear" do ones aswell but clearance inside the frame will be a problem as frame is disk and hydraulic hose runs internal.

My old Supersix had circlips inside the bb shell. The BB30 bearings were pressed into the the frame and they worked as a stop preventing the bearings from pressed too deep. These circlips fitted inside a groove and was removable. Thus if you removed the circlips you could install a BB that join with thread in the middle.

However my new Supersix (2018) has BB30A. There are no circlips inside the BB shell any more. These "bearing stop" are now part of the frame and made from carbon.

Besides the longer BB shell I also don't think it will be possible to use a third party BB (with joining thread in the centre) on this frame. (The carbon that replaced the circlips will be in its way)

Anybody ?

The carbon stops won't be an issue. The BBinfinite unit however won't fit in the carbon frame. Its designed to into a frame that doesn't have those stops.

The other issue is with the BBinfinite BB30A for 30mm cranks is that the ball bearings are tiny and I'm not convinced they will last. They are removable but finding replacements may not be as easy as a trip to bearingman

My concern is with original PF30 bearing design using the two stand alone bearings. I dont have any personal experience with it, however I have read it is prone to creaking. This looks like it might be another option " Tripeak-Ceramic-Bearing-4-In-1-Bottom-Bracket-for-BB30-PF30-BB30A-PF30A-/323444090234 " Although as previously mentioned PF30 and BB30 not the same

BB 30, BB30A, PF30, PF30A, BB386, BBRight all running 30mm axle cranks will all use the same 6806 bearing.

The key issue is the location of the bearing lands on the Crank axle, and the shell width.

The above bb is called 4 in 1 but it is in fact the same product just packaged to reflect the different bb applications it fits into.

It's only e thirteen and race face cinch that sometimes presents because of the bearing placement and not all pf30 thread together bb units can accommodate. Some need an external bearing.

But for bb30 and pf 30 the only difference is that bb30 presses the bearing directly into the shell and pf 30 fits the bearing into a holder that is then pressed and sometimes bonded into the shell
