Hey H-R

I found a really lekker 2km course near the dumps (just off the putfontein off ramp) - has a bit of everything, dropoffs, sharp climbs, singleish track (quad track?) and even strangely enough being in the dumps, some loose sand.

Do you reckon there might be enough interest to have a monthly meet to ride / race on this track?

Reasons I reckon it has value:

1. makes a change from riding on (mostly) roads the whole damn time

2. if we get a bunch of people together, it makes being in the dumps safer

3. it would add some fun to be able to ride against others on a track like this - make it a bit more challenging, and add incentive to push a bit harder than one might normally.

4. the short track makes it suitable for beginners - don't have to worry about being left behind somewhere out in the sticks

5. it's challenging enough for more experienced riders

Reckon the idea has any merit?  Anyone else got any comments/thoughts?

Cheers

Dave

I'm in Edenvale and am getting tired of riding around the flat miele fields near Pomona, Bredell and Bapsfontein.

Why not start compiling a list of MTB routes for us East Rand people. I ride a lot from Finish Line Cycles, often towrds PTA round the back of the Engen 1-stop on the R21 or out to Petit/Bapsfontein. Sometimes out near Fly-Inn. Nice 50-60km route if you want and its easy to get to from Crystal Park area.

If you live in Edenvale

Sizwe veld behind Edenvale Hospital, incorperating the old Huddle park Gold course.

We leave Saturdays 06:30 from Karaglen virgin Active or you can hook up with us from the Engen garage in Linksfield road at approx 06:45. Route is certainly technical in the Sizwe veld part and flat in the Huddle Park part, so you can get both types of workouts

just a thought - have you guys checked the legality of riding on mine dumps?

Technically they should be no go areas? Confused

Would imagine just as legal as the locals panning for gold there!

So here is the thing....would your medical/bike insurance pay you out if you you did some damage while trespassing?

Certain sections of the route are no go due to heavy construction trucks riding on narrow roads, other than that its all go just beware of leaping scramblers and quad bikes.

You would not catch me on a mine dump. To many heavy metal contaminants for my liking.

Of course the mine dumps in question are on the east rand... Here we don't let a little thing like toxic waste scare us...

I recently had to claim on my medical insurance after crashing while trespassing. I'm happy to report that I was paid out smiley36.gif

Where is Putfontein? It would be really nice to have a once-a-week MTB race fairly close to home. I still miss Mintek.

Well, that was the one thing that I liked about this route - skirts the bottom of one of the dumps, but the rest is on normal ground.  Also means less grit in the bike.
