Time to upgrade from my beloved Makrodale...

Somebody brought to my attention a Specialized Stumpjumper... But I'm guessing you get more frame than specs when it comes to Specialized for your moola. I could probably get a better specced bike with some of the alternatives mentioned in this thread. But I could be wrong.

Ha ha a "Real Cannondale". Appreciate the suggestions, will check those out when I head to BA. It certainly is, looking forward to it. Hoping I can find a place in cape town with more stock of Merida's though.

See if you could test ride a trek fuel ex. They are good all round bikes and quite capable in my opinion. I test rode one from BMT cycles at one of their demo days. They are in Stellenbosch. Don't know where you are located.

I ride a stumpjumper, but I think for the components you can get on other bikes for the same price they are more expensive. I got a good secondhand deal on mine and I absolutely love it.

Seems like Bike Addict is the place to check out, I'll have to take a drive out there.

DONT !

Okay, let me rephrase .... dont drive there until speaking to them beforehand !!  They do NOT carry stock of everything in-store .....

I have done the Cape-to-Malmesbury drive to find that I wanted was available on-line, but not in-store ......

NOTE - that goes for CWC-on-line and for Evobikes as well ....

Having said that, I have since called them to confirm stock, driven through and found the service to be EXCELLENT.

No need in repeating the various comments about geometry and spec level ....

The only comment that I can add - when you test ride the bikes.  DO test the "twin-lock-out" found on some of these models.  It simply WORKS !!!

When I do a section of tar to the trails, the shocks gets LOCKED, and the bikes is as efficient as a rigid.  Getting onto the gravel roads, I open the shocks one-click, into traction mode.  No "Bobbing" while I pedal, yet it is a comfortable ride.  And mid stride when the going gets rough, one more click on the handlebar and you have all the benefit of FULL suspension.  And when you grab a low gear and head up the next hill you dont have to take your hands off the bars to get back to "traction mode".

Agree with this. I also ride the ST stumpy, the bike is awesome, but the entry level components leave much to be desired.

It's a great excuse to go smell tyres and get a feel for that new bike (even if they don't have the one you are after).  :w00t:

Thanks, I'll definitely do so, I think there's one in Durbanville. I'm in CBD CT. Will go check it out.
