Does anyone know where one can go have their polar watch/accessories fixed in the Cape Town area? I heard that if you need anything repaired, even just replacing the battery you'd need to courier it through to their head office in JHB?!

That is unfortunately true.  We returned a S725 at the beginning of the year to the shop we bought it from and they filled in the forms and did the couriering.  It was quick and the watch was repaired, the courier cost was R50 if I remember correctly. The job is only done in Jhb.

Replace the battery yourself. It isn't difficult and there's not much that can go wrong. You just need a jeweller's philips screwdriver' date=' some good light and a clean working area.

Not worth it, you could possibly do it yourself, but you will void your warrenty, IHF also check your transmitter, replace your seals etc...

What mr Bornman says is true. I lived in Mozambique, Nigeria and now in Angola. There are not many Polar agents here.

A few things to be awareof are:-

Do NOT touch the rubber o-ring seal. If it comes out you cannot replace it and the watch will leak. Polar do a test to ensure the seal closes properly. If moisture ingresses your watch WILL be ruined and you WILL not have a warranty claim.

Make sure you do not tighten the screws too much. The screws are minuature self tapping screws that screws into the watch body. If you strip the thread ypour watch is shot and you will not have a warranty claim. If Polar strips the threads it is their problem.

You now make your own assessment and make a decision on your own responsibility. If you are not technically minded do not even try to attempt to change the battery yourself.

mr Bornman will most likely post a reply to say that their warranty are not worth the paper it is written on. I can assure you the Polar warranty is worth the paper it is written on. I have had my own warranty experiences with them and they honored every claim I had. Even in dubious circumstances.

It is a simple operation, but I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself.

I was the techy at IHF for about 4 and half years.

I saw quite a few HRM that were damaged by jewellers or users who "just changed the battery"

it is expensive when the other componets get damaged esp. the PCBA.

rather send it in and you are assured it will be done properly.

Hendrik, I do take offense when you put words in my mouth. Please don't do it.

I happen to think that Polar offers excellent service and they've gauranteed things for me which were definitely more than 12 months old.

My point is that replacing a battery is not difficult. Also, no dire warning needed about touching the seal. It is a silicone rubber seal that's pretty robust. It can only go in one way and yes, butter-fingered guys can mess it up, but for goodness sake, we're talking four screws, one seal and some common sense.

One more tip, when you have the watch open, engrave the battery number somewhere on the casing so that next time you can have a battery ready before opening it.
