Thule Bike Rack Problem - Burnt Tyre!

Hi All,

I've just started riding again, and ended up burning my bike's tyres as they are directly in line with the exhausts on my car!  :(

On my old car the exhausts pointed down onto the tarmac, so it wasn't ever a problem.

It's an older model Thule 3-bike rack with built-in taillights and I can't really see a way of raising it above the exhausts. I don't want to have to replace it as it's still in great condition and does the job perfectly otherwise.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a work-around?

Can't you go to an exhaust specialist and just have a little mod added to the end of the exhaust to blow down?

Thanks, but apart from the looks I really don't want to be modifying the car considering warranties and all that ....

something could be made up that could go on the exhaust temporarily, as in only when you use the rack.

or

something that attaches to the bike rack that redirects the exhaust when the rack is on.

Thanks, like I said above I want to leave the car alone, but maybe your guy can weld a plate to the rack, that should work!

I'll send you a pm for his number!

Heard of melted carbon rims but not melted tyres... The Prado / Fortuna are the worst culprits... A plate pop riveted onto the bike rack probably your best bet...

That could work too, thanks! If I don't come right with the deflectors kit or modifying the rack I will give it a go!

Yup, popped the tyres and melted the rimtape. Lucky I'm still on ally rims ....

Hmmm, that's sounds even easier than the welding actually, thanks!

Do they do heat treating on rims like they do on frames? Just thinking that if they do then the rims structure could now be compromised as some of that treating would have been undone.
