jamaccelari - she most prolly would have given way if she could see the cyclist... no lights means not visible and it's also illegal to not have lights (never mind stupid)

my thoughts are with the runner.

Agreed - no lights is suicidal...

One question: was it a recreational cyclist or a "delivery" bike? I've nearly hit delivery

guys several times as they tend not to have lights and often cycle on the wrong side

of the road - against the traffic!

Helmets are compulsory for cyclists and have been since October 2004.

As for licenses - not a bad idea. Do the old toppies remember the licenses we

had in the 70s for bicycles with the traffic cops stopping lighties on their bikes

to check the discs! Ah! For the good old days!!!

You took your bike to the licence department and after paying for your licence you went into the yard and some guy with a set of metal punches punched your licence number onto your frame!!!

Depended on where you lived. We had little brass(?) discs like a dog tag.

We had little silver license disks which fitted onto your wheel cone, traffic dept used to regulary visit the school where we all had to line up and our bikes were inspected for road worthy. Unlike today's lot that prefer to sit on chairs under brollys catching speeding motorists.

What a great idea, the traffic dept should regularly inspect vehicles for road worthiness or even better; you have to get your car road worthied annually if it's older then 3 years before can get your yearly license Lamp

Not a bad idea in principle Clap, unfortunately in practice you can buy a roadworthy certificate with a bottle of cheap whiskyConfused

I almost hit two runners early this morning, pitch black in Constantia and they were wearing dark clothes had no reflective material at all, I was going about 40 km/h. They were also running abreast not facing on coming traffic so they had no idea that I was there.

In Cape Town I see very few runners wearing anything reflective, and often camping out in the road.

Over here in Bedfordview runners are a plague.  The residents don't just feel they own the road they feel they own everything.  So whatever mode of travel we adopt we're a complete pain and always right.

The amount of brooms I've lost it's costing me a fortune, not to mention the wear and tear on the electric windows.  Once the brooms are wedged in on both sides of the car you can accumulate 6 or 7 runners at a time, but you're still left with 3 or 4 live ones on the road because they jog 10-a-breast.

Don't even get me started on power walkers.  Power waddlers with dinky-grip bottles and self-important arm-swinging and we're infested with them. Simple answer is to get a light aircraft used for crop-spraying & fill it with something else agricultural.  Not only will it rid the suburb of these pests but everyone's garden is going to look lovely by spring.

I'm going to lie down now.

Huh............living in BedfordView and been an active runner, I hope I never have to meet you on the road.Wink

I thought it was only little old ladies with "blue hair rinse" that complained but I see I am mistaken, its also adult men who "behave" like little old ladies.!

As I regularly run from the VA on weekends, and as we do try and please all road users, I shall be sure to "herd" the guys into the sidewalk flowerbeds, water features, ornate fencing, and spot lights.............we shall pretend we are practising for the steeplechase.!Smile
