Suspect theft of bike

Recommended Posts

I am in the market looking for a new bike. I have been on marketplace on Facebook discussing a bike for sale.

He stated that the bike comes with a shimano group set, so in my message I asked which shimano group set. The seller sent a few messages not knowing what o had asked and eventually I find out it is 105.

I then started to ask his reason for selling. Response “ I got three of the road bike and I'm tall the frame is not my size”

This I thought strange because why would you buy a bike that is not your size? Anyway I questioned further. Asking him where he bought it to get a history of the bike. Response “ One of my friend is the one buy it for he stay in edernvil is a white guy, He buy it for me as a gift“

I asked if I could speak to his friend about the condition of the bike, whereby he replied saying the bike is still new, and he doesn’t have the contact details of the friend as he lost his phone and the friend moved to KZN (I would imagine he could contact him on FB??)

I then replied thanking him for taking my questions, but I feel the history of the bike is a bit suspicious, and that the price of R5k seems quite low for a brand new Raleigh RC6000 with shimano 105 components.

To this he got defensive and replied “ I can't sell something which is stolen broe”

I just seem to have a gut feeling that this bike may be stolen, and feel I may need to report it, however if it isn’t stolen and maybe just a person that doesn’t know too much about bikes. I don’t want to offend anybody but if it was my bike that was stolen I would appreciate someone reporting it.

Any advice?

Edit: I’m not so much curious of the price, but the fact that he states it’s new but it’s a RC6000 model.

That bike might've been brand new in 2006. 9SPD components, and you don't know what the carbon looks like in terms of fatigue and cracking..

I think it's priced right.

Story still dodge though.
