Swissvan ... surely a person should think about GOD 24/7 ... when u walk out by yr front door ... u should ask GOD to guide you and protect you ... when you go to sleep; when you get into your car; when you wake up ...not just before a race or getting into a plane???

No I'm male and dont do multi tasking....

Yep faith can be twisted into all sorts of shapes and meaning.

Back to HR's original post' date=' I can understand that someone who really believes something (has faith) can be postively affected by that belief and whatever means he/she uses to "worship" the faith.

I always say a little prayer before races asking God to help n protect me and even those I race against...

Also when I get in aeroplanes...

SwissVan, God cannot protect you or anybody else for that matter as it is contrary to a fundamental principle of the bible and that is free choice.  So when you get on a plane and pray for safety it is totally useless and basically a waste of breath. Take 911 as an example, how many people must have prayed for their safety? Plenty boet, every passenger must have been praying the hardest they have ever prayed in their life! And what happened, well, suffice to say the hijackers did not sit down again and continue reading their Koran! That is free choice. How many Christians have died in road accidents, been robbed, murdered or raped? Millions I would imagine. Any why? Is it because God is deaf? No, it is because God is powerless to interfere. If he prevented the drunk driver in the other car from drinking, or the robber from robbing, or the murderer from murdering or the rapist from raping then he has denied them free choice, reducing man to a mindless puppet.  So don?t bother praying for safety, God is not gonna do anything about it, rather pray the following ?So God, if **** happens I will see you in a short while?<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

CarbonBoy I tend to disagree with some of your statements ... I do not think GOD is powerless as you state it ... you have your reasons for saying so ...

I fail to see how "Free choice" applies to the poor unfortunate passengers on the 9/11 air disasters.?

Of course there is "evil in the world", because there is "Satan in the world" - but that has nothing to do with Free choice.

You think God dos not intervene? - you are wrong my friend, this is the same God who walked on water, who healed the sick, who raised the dead, who calmed the oceans and who rose from the dead himself,...................  why I ask, should he not continue performing miracles today??

There is a war raging around you every day CB, and its not the one in the Middle East, its a war for firstly your mind and ultimately your soul, nowhere dos it say in the bible, your life will be care free, a walk in the park,it says trouble will come your way, but it also says God will be with you in those times of trouble and that he hears every prayer.

Thats enough for me.

Good and bad things happen to all, regardless of whether you believe in Jesus or not. However,  believing & trusting changes your perception drastically, and you can handle bad things with confidence, knowing that it's temporary. We all die, whether at 25 in the Towers, or at 90 in your bed. It's what happens for the next kazillion years that we should be concerned about!!!

God gave us free choice. Take Adam for example. God said don't eat the apple. Adam had the choice to obey God or not. If he had not had that choice then we must assume that God purposely caused Adam to sin otherwise he would have purposely prevented him eating the apple i.e. he is a puppet without free choice, doing only what God allows or wants him to do. Another example, why does God allow 6 month old babies to be raped? What a heinous crime, surely this all loving God of compassion would not let such a despicable act to take place? Of course he would not if he had the power to prevent it, but, the rapist has been given free choice by God, not sometimes, but all the time. So praying for protection is like asking God to take away someone?s free choice. Can?t happen, God is powerless to do so. If he did have the power to do so and then just sat by and looked on then God is the must iniquitous and monstrously depraved being in all existence, totally unworthy of a single word of praise! If that was the case I would rather worship my dog as he would protect me against evil.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

well....i must admit that I have not read all that has been written....but every time I ride I say thank you that I have the ability and energy to ride and to get back home safe is another blessing.  I'm a Seventh Day Adventist and don't do races on Saturdays.  That's what I believe and no amount of money will make choose otherwise.  Faith is something that when it is part of your life all those big problems seem a little less big cause you know that you do not have to handle them alone

Either God exists, or He doesn't. If He doesn't, we can do what we like, without consequence. However, if He does, and He did create everything, we can assume that He's VERY powerfull and VERY clever, and we'll never understand Him fully. In that case, I think we should refrain from questioning Him too much, and get on with doing what He wants.

When I was a kid I used to pray to God for a bike. After a long time I realised he didn't work that way. So I stole one and prayed to Him for forgiveness.
