Mountainbru and I have crossed swords on this issue last week already, I must say to me personally this is less of an issue (unless of course it's a self navigated endurance ride or something).

I quiet often prefer not really knowing what to expect, and even when  the detailed map and gpx is available I don't bother with it.

Whether it's a 35km or 75km route, I have a reasonable idea in my head how long I expect to be out there and then just ride and treat everything like a surprise.

What were you guys doing 10 years ago when gps head units with mapping functions weren't readily available?

Sometimes having too much information spoils the fun. That's why I hardly even ride with my edge anymore. Just use the watch to log the ride, and will have a look over the stats post ride, sometimes.

Sometimes I think riders take themselves way too seriously.

I realize being a roadie also makes you appreciate having the route on your edge unit far more than on a MTB, and I guess I've really gotten used to it. On the road, It can literally make the race safer if you know we're 500m from a sharp left turn, so I should expect the bunch to start braking soon. Or from a non-safety point of view, to know that it's only 300m to the top of climb, so even if I'm suffering, it's really worthwhile to dig deep to stay in a bunch rather than getting dropped.  On a MTB it's more of a luxury I guess, but still really useful at times.

I was referring more to maps than gpx files. I do mass participation road races, there has never been a need for me to have a gpx file, but I do like to see which roads the route takes to mentally prepare myself.

I have only gotten lost once in a "race", and that was a very small fun ride where I lost sight of the leading group, saw a few cyclists on a side road and chased them down only to ask them if they were in the race and find out I've taken the wrong turn.

being a roadie

I get it now.

No Camelback, two water bottles, need to know where you're going...

The beauty of cycling is that all preferences are catered to. I will never see your point of view on any of the above Bru, but I celebrate the common enjoyment (do roadies enjoy anything?) of riding on two wheels.

Back to the point of this thread though, any service provider/retailer that makes it difficult for me to find the cost of their service or product won't see my business.

Not just events.

I tried to quickly buy two 26" tyres I had promised my garden worker from the CycleLab as I was passing and had 5 minutes to spare.

Nope, can't pay unless I give them my name, cell phone number and email. I was about to leave when someone was called to override the system.

Last time they see me.

If you have the time and the inclination you can get them wrapped on the knuckles, in terms of POPIA they have to tell you why they want your info, who will have access to it and what will it be used for.
