Ok so i thought i would read up on the topic related to MTB tyres in the archives and not bother anybody with this topic already been covered many times, only thing is now im more confused than ever !!

Ive kinda leaning towards the Mountain King or Kenda Nevegal's as a multi purpose tyre good for the dry and mud

Any body wanna confuse me some more and throw in a third or fourth option ?

I just saw in MBUK a little ad for Schwalbe where they show when and where to use Nobby Nics, Racing Ralphs and Furious Fred. I would love to try a 2.1 Nobby Nic on the front and a 1.9 Racing Ralph on the back.

Everyone has their favourites:

Maxxi larsen TT is legend

Maxxi Crossmarks is an attempt to improve on the Larsen TT

maxxi ranchero is maxxi's  nice "cheap and nasty" that works surprisingly well

Kenda small block eight is good to a point in the dry (can bet a bit skitish on the corners)

Kenda karma with sidewall protection work well in Groenkloof

Kenda komodo is a nice "cheap and nasty" that works surprisingly well.

THere are also other manufacturers like schwable, conti ext

Ok. My 5cents worth.

I love the Kenda Karma 2.1 UST's. I run them both front and back, and the work for me, beautifully. I have also used the Nevegal (F) and Karma ® combination which was awesome off road, but was a bit high res in the rolling depatment.

A close mate of mine believes in the Karma (F) and Maxiss Crossmark ® combination. Nice thing about this is is that the Crossmark is a long lasting tyre and runs nicely on both mud and dry ground. If you do travel off road as much as we do riding with the roadies when we are alowed, then this is the combo I would go for.

Thinking purely off road. It depends on the amount of grip you  desire. I know for a fact that the Nevegal has oodles of grip, but like i said, it has a rolling resistance.

It all comes down to what you want and what you enjoy. Big%20smile

Hope I've helped.

Kenda Karma is the best you can get for all conditons . The TT's also delivers good service .

Gonna have to throw the Spesh Fast Trak into the hat here, good grip, great rolling tyre, pretty light, not too expensive and last quite a while even if you abuse 'em.

Maxxis Crossmark are an excellent all round tyre. Do battle to shed the mud.

Larsen OK in dry hardpack or loose rocks but rubbish in the mud. Don't shed at all.

Quite keen on trying the Crossmax on the back with something a bit grippy on the front thing. Makes sense.

If only we could get Maxxis Ignitors in this country. I loved mine but they were removed from another bike by the bike shop so I got them cheap.

My Crossmarks last so long that I dont do much tyre shopping. Have had one puncture in 3 years and that was a nice slit from a smashed beerbottle. Sealed with a decent patch from the inside. No problems. Wouldn't do this on a side wall though.

The Mountain King Soper Sonic is the Best tyre I have used on the back as yet, a close second is the Kenda Karma I had on there before the Mountain King. Had CrossMax before that and the grip was not all the great but a solid tyre, very strong!

On the front I have stuck with the Nevegal since I can't get over how strong it is, I have hit a few rocks in the past(Conti Explorer, Super Soinc, Karma and Maxiss) and my tyres would not last but the Nevegal has taken a few moerse hits and survived over and over again, really great tyre, as for it's grip, I'm not sold on it and I think it could be better but nothing is perfect I guess.

My tuppence:

Maxxis Larsen & Crossmark are great for "normal" SA conditions.

The Maxxis Monorail is a good all rounder with better mud flinging capabilities.

I have a brand new set of ignitors lying in my garage that i rode with only once for 50 kays, they're 2.35's though, gimme 300 bux for both...

On the topic at hand, i love my small block eights in our current dryish winter conditions, but crap in summer in the mud, in which case my nevegals rock, but yup, *** rolling resistance. Gonna give tubeless takkies on my new XC steed a try, Conti mountain kings, apparently they're excellent tyres.

Anybody seen the price of schwalbe tyres lately...? Set of ralphs is gonna set you back like 800 S.A. rondts... Crazy...
