I moved from The Netherlands to SA some years ago and have never bought a new bike over here. Is it common practice to ask for a discount when buying a new bike and if it is, what would be a reasonable percentage for a bike of around 60K ?

A common saying is: If you don't ask, you don't get...

If you are a regular at a bike shop you could get up to 10% off on certain consumables - 5% if not a regular.

Bikes are regularly discounted when the new model (following year) is about to be released. Can be cheaper if they are trying to clear old stock!

But due to current stock shortages, discounts might be hard to come by at this point in time...

Best may be to actually research pricing beforehand.

Well worth noting that the RRP (recommended retail price) is just what the shop thinks it should be that morning .... :cursing:

Once you start searching for a particular product you will soon find that the RRP is widely different at different shops.  So a "5%" discount at one may well be a better price than a 20% discount at another .....

And MANY shops have caught out time and again hiking the RRP price the day before a "big sale" ....  with the sale price actually being higher than their normal price.

In terms of "real specials" on bicycles - the best I have seen was when the new bikes land here, then the previous model gets marked down drastically to move stock.  I have paid R36k for a bike that had a RRP between R50k and R54k, purely because the new stock was already on the floor.  Given the stock shortages of the last year I doubt these types of specials are out there now ....
