Honestly, my 2c. Get a good coach(not one of the million lockdown induced online coaches) to put together a balanced well structured training plan and stick to the plan. You will end up with better results in the long term in my opinion.

worst was the hills, you feel like you want to push but then the HR starts climbing.

And then also near the end where you are now tired of holding back, the temptation to push gets more.

 

With the heat and the distance i still felt like I had a good workout.

Here's a ride where I tried to get the club to ride long and slow, to get them to feel what a 3.5-4 hour ride was like (in Z1+2). My MAF would be 132bpm, but I know my aerobic threshold is close to 140bpm. Averafge age on the ride was 57.5, so I guess that helped keeping the pace easy.
