lets not blow this out of proportion, please guys.....read what he said....(and that is exactly what most of us have been saying all along)....the course DOESN'T suit him, but rather riders like J-L. Robert doesn't have a snowballs change of winning a medal any way on that hilly course, and again if he doens't perform at  Olympics what's going to happen back here.....we'll slam him......

he should not have been selected in the first place

Robbie is just being honest!! Olympics does not pay the bills ... Maybe he is use to the PRO money by now; hence why he make comments like that ... If I was on the Selection/Management committee I would also exclude him and give the position to next-in-line!

Suppose than the Selection committee of CSA needs to be replaced with people that knows/understands the RIDERS capabilities!

You correct .. South Africans must also understand that although Robbie made an international presence in cycling; his strength is SPRINTING!

ConfusedPerhaps rather than slam the value of an Olympic medal because he has very little chance of winning it, he should have rather conceded this fact way back and left the place for someone else more committed.

I have always understood the Olympics to be the ultimate goal for all athletes!

Track and Field athletes perhaps, many other pro sports couldn't give a damn. Personally I don't really give a damn either, I hardly watch any of it; even back in the day when I used to run middle distance I only watched the middle distance events, nowadays I might watch the road cycling event if I don't have anything else on. Personally I'm not into presentations from the International Organization for Corruption.

Its not strictly true that the Olympics are not valued by the pros.  Many have made it clear that the Olympics are a primary goal for the season, Evans included.  Admittedly it does come  primarily from guys in countries where the Olympics is a big deal - UK, US, Aus.

Please! He is being honest and he is right, give the man a break!

To cyclists the Olympics are not that important. I am not at all bothered by the fact that I am not going to the Olympics, but if I don't turn pro at the end of the year my whole world will turn upside down..

For many sports the Olympics are the biggest and most important event that there is. In cycling that is not the case.

One reason for that is that cycling is a team sport and your pro team pays your salary, not the country whom you compete for at the olympics (the world Champ gets to wear a jersey all year which makes a big difference to a pro team).

As for Olympics for Amateurs... The Olympics are for the best athletes in the world. Not for amateurs who want to step up a level. Not to mention that most amateurs are on more drugs than the pro's so that won't improve anything (if you want to fight doping sort out the UCI/ASO/everyone battle and the problem will be gone before you know it).

Craven, your successes are appreciated and admired. I will question your logic on the amatuer / pro issue. The Olympics until rcently were an amatuer only event. This does not mean that the best athletes do not take part, only those that see it as an objective. If SA is not capable of riding for a leader or Rob is not the man to do the job in China is he the best athlete, I don't think so, so don't send him. Waste of his time and Our money. Take Golf...players move through the amatuer ranks, competeing against the pro's until they themselves are able to turn Pro. As for the Drug issue, let's not open a door to that discussion. You of all will know how quickly that will turn to 17 pages. Good Luck with your career, I watch with enthusiasm.

And if Hunter wasnt selected you wankers would moan more than your wife on a good nite.

Couldn't agree more.

Olympics dont mean much to road cyclists except a good 3 week break and jol. Track riders have a different view, they seem to value olympics higher than world champs.

I agree with Hunter. He obviously has to be in the team and if SA are going to send riders he has to go. If I wa sin his shoes I would also go and pull the ass end out of whoever is paying for the trip.

Take it while the going is good. ****the rest. When they get to the same level they can also make comments like that. In cycling the first thing you learn is worry about yourself and nobody else.

Interesting line from Chunky the past four weeks I have heard this statement from many a top cyclist/manager/agent.

"In cycling the first thing you learn is worry about yourself and nobody else"

One of our top junior ladies father made the same comment whilst preparing her on the track last saturday as well.

Now I understand the reasons behind the apathy to have provincial/national academies set-up for the enhancement of local talent. Only invest where you know a return on value will be given to you either financially or personally.Surely Rob discussed this issue with management when informed of his selection.

... and if he had a choice of winning an olympic gold or a TDF stage' date=' he'd take the tour stage hands up Approve
