Hi all,

I'm keen on volunteering at this year's Cape Epic as a family member will be competing as one of the riders. Was wondering if I could get some insight from past years' volunteers.

The volunteer page lists the following job roles:

  • Water Point Activation Team
  • Race Nutrition Service Team
  • Pro Tech Support Team
  • Strip Stop Team
  • Start/ Finish Team
  • Tracking Team

Not much more detail is listed beyond that. Does anyone have more insight into what are the actual responsibilities of the different roles? Which once involve the most amount of work? Which once increase chances of overlapping with my rider in the race?

Overall I've heard good things about the volunteer programme so overall looking forward to the event and hope I will be selected as a volunteer.

Thanks in advance.

Would you mind copying me in, please?
(I’ve ridden 3; might be nice for me to ‘give back’, as it were…)

Cheers

Ok, lets answer the post from personal experience, you have to send in your application with a brief description of your experiences as they relate to cycling, I did it in 2018. The if you get chosen you will be ask to pay.

Now my guess is that the job you are assigned is directly related to your dossier, you won't know what your assignment is until you get to the pic. I don't really know if you can request something(job) and you'll get it.

For what I saw the level of difficulty and hours between jobs is huge. The longest hours are for checkpoints and anything related to them.  Start/finish easy but usually twice per day, pro race support very easy, drive setup, pickup and leave.

The hours are like, the race hours, the food and tents as well. I enjoyed it a lot, to be honest you get to see more of the epic, than when you race. The are some professional volunteers, they don't get paid. But the have done many epics. Jan should be the epic ambassador a strong and kind  lady. If you get to work with her, you will have fun.

Oh yes the volunteer package is pretty cool, ours everything was custom for volunteers.

Any other question, let me know. Now all this is from 2019, how is it now I'm not sure.
